I believe Harry Reid was brilliant with Miers and here's why!
I just read earlier today that Miers was Reid's idea and I think it was brilliant. Here's why:

It has all the conservatives blowing around and freaking out. I don't think they are freaking out for the right reason though. I think they are freaking out because they're afraid of what secrets will come out. Not long ago someone did a post about all the rightwing "Christian" groups who are tied together with the GOP and they're all in everything together. They know the secrets and plannings as well. The rightwing does not want their secrets to come out through the papers. We've already learned how Jeff Gannon (or whatever) got his press passes so who knows what else we'll learn. I remember reading earlier in the week how Kennedy had already started requesting for information. There could be tons of stuff in there that Bush doesn't want leaked and now they could be blowing it. Reid also knew that the democrats wouldn't have had enough votes to get rid of Miers in the committee since the republicans always vote party-line. So if he comes out in favor of Miers the republicans will probably think there is something wrong with her and she hasn't told where she stands on gay marriage and abortion (it's so sad how all these people care about is sex) and that's the only reason why they supported Roberts and because Bush wanted him. The "pro-life" people are angry because Bush was supposed to nominate someone for them because they believe they won the election with "moral values". Nothing is looking good for Bush now with the Fitzgerald case coming to a close sometime this month and anything can happen to them. This is going to be so good. Get the popcorn y'all.

32. Speaking of Harry...
I got a letter to go to His Letter Writing Campaign about the Energy Bill @ http://www.giveemhellharry.com

I shortened up the Strategies section and ammended it to fit my own beliefs. Harry has some stuff in there I didn't fully support and didn't go far enough in my opinion on some things.

But here's my letter:

To Star Tribune, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Minnesota Daily

Subject What an Energy Bill Should Look Like

Goal of Reducing Our Dependence on Foreign Oil should be in the first paragraph.

It should have a substance that rewards conservation of energy and efficient energy use rather than rewarding the price gouging fuel industry and people who buy fuel guzzling vehicles.

Stratagies:

1) Fund Exploration/Use of:
– domestic biofuels
– solar
- wind
- geothermal
– hydrogen
– clean coal

2) Protect People/Environment
– Eliminate price gouging
- Stop disaster profiteers
- Prosecute market manipulators and those who abuse government power in times of crises.
– Increase energy market transparency and consumer choice at the pump
– Expand the EIC (Earned Income Tax Credit) to cover higher household energy costs
– Provide accurate fuel economy information
– Protect pristine public lands from short-sighted oil and gas exploitation
– Enhance funding for weatherization and low-income energy assistance needs in all climates

3) Improve Energy Security and Stop Price Gouging and Market Manipulation
– Create geographically diverse gas and jet fuel reserves
– Encourage inventors to create more fuel efficient cars.
- Allow such cars to be manufactured and test market distributed.
- Maintain state clean air protections while streamlining regulations.
– Encourage a better designed, more fairly distributed electricity system

4) Reduce Demand for Oil and Natural Gas.
– Government use of Hybrid vehicles, high efficiency fuel cars and public transportation.
– Promote, encourage and reward more fuel efficient choices in every area of government, business and private life.
– Promote use of renewable substitutes for natural gas.
– Renew the electricity infrastructure for hybrids and plug-in hybrids
– Increase mass transit use and incentivize transit-oriented development
– Shorten flight times through better air traffic management.
- Repeal corporate welfare's "rich boy fuel credit" where US tax dollars subsidise corporate jet flights at as little as $00.01 a gallon for JET Fuel.
– Improve tractor trailer aerodynamics, logistics, and idling to conserve fuel.

5) Invest in Energy Efficiency and American Jobs.
– Update efficiency standards.
– Invest in math and science.
– Ensure access to worker training and retraining in advanced energy technologies

2. Brilliance or luck, it's a grand slam for Harry Reid
I'm not a big fan of Harry Reid, he's right of me on social issues, but he did OK on this one.

When he put his arm around her and took credit for recommending her, the hot air just blew right out of the far right. OMG, they are livid!

I love it.

11. Oh that was so good!
And to see Ann Coulter freaking out. LOL! Nice one! I think Rove has met his match with Harry Reid. And with Reid and social issues the only thing I care about is that he'll uphold Roe V Wade and fight for it. I personally am both pro-life and pro-choice. I could never have an abortion but I couldn't stop someone else (especially rape, incest or a medical issue).

4. That is why Harry came out for her...
...he knew it was the kiss of death.

Harry is ALOT smarter than he looks. He didn't become the Senate Minority Leader by being dumb. He plays political chess better than many men his senior.

Cordial and mild manner though he may appear, the guy has a core of steel. And yes, he can look you in the eye and smile while plotting how to gut you later.

Underestimating Harry Reid is a BAD idea...

12. I think so too
I remember when I first saw Mr. Reid it was on "Meet the Press" in 2004 since I missed the convention back in 2004. :( But there was just something about him and I read more about him as well and his dealing(s) with the mafia in Las Vegas and how he actually physically fought for his wife (sooo sweet). When he talks he has that grandfatherly type of voice and calmness which is really sweet. I remember back in the beginning of the year the republicans put out this booklet about how to "get" Harry Reid and he came out immediatley and told the whole press about the book and how it was shameful and I don't think they ever did anything. Reid and Pelosi are the best team together!

5. I think you are right or it's something similar to that
The second I saw him Embrace her I knew that would freak out those on the far Right. Reid seems to know something we don't know. He is a sharp guy who knows how to play chess and win.

I am wondering if Rove has been out of the loop lately because Bush's message has been pathetic lately! Now Bush blunders like this with Miers? Either Rove is off his game or he is out of the picture now.

13. Don't forget of the picture
floating around of Miers with Bush and Rove apparently taken around the Wilson/Plame case started. She's highly involved in that as Bush's personal lawyer and since she is on the White House consel she does not have the privacy to those papers such as with Roberts. I also don't think Dobson knew anything. I think that was a ploy by Rove and the group to gather the faith with the conservatives and to support Miers so she'd be a quicky like with Roberts and nothing would come out. Now they've blown it since hopefully a lot more information will come out. I think maybe Reid could be bringing them down even more.

Edited on Sun Oct-09-05 01:06 AM by FreedomAngel82
I'm always butting heads with a conservative and in my last post to this person mentioned how Harry Reid was the person behind the nominee and how Bush listened to a "liberal" (since they lump us all together anyways). I wonder how they'll react to that. Remember when Bush told how he got some interesting ideas from Senators? Ding, ding, ding!

8. You would think W would go outside the immediate fold
If there is such a person on the right wing planet. Someone more pleasing to the right wing sphere. There has to be someone in this world who is conservative and not enmeshed with W and all the Repukes with dirt in their teeth. Heck, he could ask Roberts for advice.

In my heart, I think he's trying to feather the SCOTUS nest with those who will vote for the corporate interests as well as pull the collective W, Cheney, Rove and Libby ass out of the fire if need be. For him to have to have such a short reach nudges me to believe that he's very worried about himself. And that's more important that pleasing the christian fascistas who voted for his turdness.

I'm blathering. Meantime, will definitely keep the popcorn a-poppin'! I like the way you think.

15. Oh of course
It's so obvious that Roberts and Miers are for his corporate buddies. This guy is so in bed with them he has to save their asses to save their own(s). If he goes down they will and if they go down they'll come back to them. This also goes to show the republicans that Bush isn't one of them and doesn't really care about the issues they do. This is the last chance they'll have to get a true "pro-life" family values type person. Bush hasn't really given them much of a reason to believe she is one of them besides a few things here and there. The hearings should be really interesting and I can't wait for the show with that. This nomination could get a lot of the really conservative people upset with the republicans to where they'll stay home in 2006 and maybe 2008. :) And with a lot of them turning we can get out the vote majorly next year and take back the House and Senate.

She should NOT be confirmed, by any means-just WAY inappropriate. What would be great would be if she actually got indicted, or at least had to testify. She isn't an attourney for all of them is she? Someone posted she was involved with press passes -a link to G/G.

the friends of * who spend a lot of time thinking about gay sex for people who claim they don't approve of gay behavior. Reid can always back out of supporting her if the right revelation comes. If this isn't Reid's money shot then I'm going to start losing interest in him as a major choice. On the other hand, if he's not making his move, he will help our party in ways we can't imagine. We need a big take down and a clever one at that.

36. Like Doesn't Mean Confirm...
I like the Repugnican down the block. He's a nice guy. He keeps his lawn nice and neat, donates once in a while to our local veteran's support group and actually takes down his xmas decorations before New Years. He's also a pretty good electrician and I'd probably recommend him if you needed your fuse blown. But as far as judging the lives and laws of this country? I wouldn't trust him as far as I can spit.

Remember, there were recent books by Lott & Hatch about how they had an important "advise and consent" role that made them look "statesmanlike". IIRC, Lott even mentioned how he enjoyed bantering back and forth with Clinton (the fool!) and Hatch mentioned he had suggested Ginsburg's name to Clinton. I get a feeling booooosh felt he could play "uniter" and leave a legacy like these others with this pick.

I sense Reid saw this weakness in boooosh and played up to it. The pressure from the right wing on Roberts and now this pick had to be a pain on boy blunder. If anything the fundies are starting to get under his skin. They gave him static on Roberts and haven't really "stood by him" as his poll numbers drop...while good old Harry's there to laugh and joke and pal with...he doesn't seem to be that bad of a guy and he sure went along with the Harriet idea.

After listening to a lot of the right wing spin the past couple days, I'm thinking the manchild actually thinks he's got the solid support of the right wing no matter what and by getting a Democrat like Reid on the line this would push the deal through on just his sheer "smarts". Yep...the boy thought he was that smart.

It also shows how rudderless things are getting inside the Executive. I'm thinking Turdblossom is too busy with other matters right now...Frau Bluecher (Karen Hughes) and Condi aren't nearby either. He's totally in an echo chamber of his own creation now and totally alone. This really makes this loser dangerous right now.

Hopefully Miers will never get to the confirmation stage...and this game could drag on well into next year.

37. Yessssssss!
There's not that much difference between the noises that Roberts made about being impartial and the noises Harriet is making about being impartial.

The big difference is that the lunatic right wing fringe thinks she isn't lying. And Chimpy is waving his arms at them, saying "the fix is in." And neither half of that is sitting well with the average American.

I'm really hoping somebody like Crazy Tom Coburn badgers Harriet until she breaks down and cries during the hearings.

43. Well, you have a very optimistic outlook...
It's not easy to predict but when it all comes down to it I think Miers, if she doesn't withdraw will be confirmed with something like a 52-48 vote, and then we'll be stuck with her rightwing votes slamming down on Roe and dozens of other cases for years to come. Not to mention she'll rule on behalf of the bushies if/when their criminal cases make it up there. It's fun now watching the pillow fight, but in the end it equals to the same thing: another extremist on the court.
