words of encouragement from Jim Morrison
I've been reaching back through time for moral support and thought I would share.

*from Five to One*

Five to one, baby, one in five
No one here gets out alive
Now you'll get yours, baby
I'll get mine
Gonna make it, baby, if we try
THE OLD GET OLD
AND THE YOUNG GET STRONGER
MAY TAKE A WEEK
AND IT MAY TAKE LONGER
GONNA WIN, YEAH
WE'RE TAKING OVER, COME ON!

*from When The Music's Over*

We're gettin' tired of hangin' around
Waitin' around with our heads to the ground
I hear a very gentle sound, Very near yet very far
Very soft, yeah, very clear, Come today, come today
What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down
I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
We want the world and we want it
Now
Now?
Now!

TITLE Do What I Have to Do
ALBUM · A Toast to Those Who Are Gone (1987)
LYRICS

Pre>intro: dm g dm g

Dm g dm g
All around this country, trouble in the air
Bb am f c7
And I hear the voices calling me
F bb f dm
Asking "do you know and do you care?
Bb c7 f f7
Do you know and do you care? "

Bb f f7
So I’m a-gonna do what I have to do
Bb f f7
Say what I have to say
Bb am f c7
And I’m gonna be what I have to be
F bb f dm
Now won’t you come on along with me?
Bb c7 f
Won’t you come along with me?

Don’t want to cause no sorrow
Don’t want to cause no pain
I’m only gonna cause what I have to cause
Until this land is free of shame
’til this land is free of shame

So I’m a-gonna do what I have to do
Say what I have to say
And I’m gonna be what I have to be
Now won’t you come on along with me?
Won’t you come along with me?

Only one thing I know, I know we’re not alone
Was a million here before we came
Be a million when we’re gone, we’re gone
Million when we’re gone

So I’m a-gonna do what I have to do
Say what I have to say
And I’m gonna be what I have to be
Now won’t you come on along with me?
Won’t you come along with me?

Oh, I’m afraid of trouble, yes I’m afraid of jail
But I’m more afraid, lord, not to try
More afraid of what happens, now, if we fail
What happens now if we fail

So I’m a-gonna do what I have to do
Say what I have to say
And I’m gonna be what I have to be
Now won’t you come on along with me?
Won’t you come along with me?

12. Truth
Anyone who has never heard of Phil Ochs should browse through those lyrics pages. And if you haven't heard his voice, Amazon has a fair number of short clips associated with various albums.

A truthteller. Another excerpt from http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/phil-ochs/108183.html could be about Iraq:
From "Cops of The World," 1966

Please stay off of the grass, boys
Please stay off of the grass
Here’s a kick in the ass, boys
Here’s a kick in the ass
We’ll smash down your doors, we don’t bother to knock
We’ve done it before, so why all the shock?
We’re the biggest and toughest kids on the block
’cause we’re the cops of the world, boys
We’re the cops of the world

When we butchered your son, boys
When we butchered your son
Have a stick of our gum, boys
Have a stick of our buble-gum
We own half the world, oh say can you see
The name for our profits is democracy
So, like it or not, you will have to be free
’cause we’re the cops of the world, boys
We’re the cops of the world

Everybody Knows Lyrics
(Print the Lyrics)

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
everybody knows the war is over
and everybody knows the good guys lost
everybody knows the fight was fixed
the poor stay poor and the rich get rich
that's how it goes
and everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
everybody knows the captain lied
everybody got this broken feeling
that their father or their dog just died
everybody talkin' to their pockets
everybody wants a box of chocolates
and a long stem rose
and everybody knows

( chorus )
Everybody knows, everybody knows
that's how it goes, and everybody

Everybody knows that you love me baby
everybody knows that you really do
everybody knows that you've been faithful
give or take a night or two
everbody knows that you've been discret
there were so many people you just had to meet
without your clothes
and everybody knows

Everybody knows that it's now or never
everybody knows that it's me or you
everybody knows that you live forever
when you've done a line or two
and everybody knows that the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
for your ribbons and bows
and everybody knows

( chorus x2 )

Everbody knows that the plaque is comin'
everybody knows that it's movin' fast

everybody knows that the naked man and woman
are just a shining artifact of the past
everybody knows that the scene is dead,
but there's gonna be a meter on your bed
that will disclose,
what everybody knows

Everybody knows that you're in trouble
everybody knows what you've been through
from the bloody cross on top of Calvary
to the beach at Malibu
and everybody knows it's coming apart
take one last look at this sacred heart
before it blows,
and everybody knows

( chorus )"

8. Hey, Let's Keep this Morrison Thread Going!
How about "Horse Latitudes"?

When the still sea conspires in armor,
and her sullen and aborted currents breed tiny monsters,
true sailing is dead!
Akward instant,
and the first animal is jettisoned,
legs furiously pumping their stiff green gallop
and heads bob up.
Poise, delicate, pause, consent,
in mute nostril agony,
carefully refined and sealed over!

11. One of my all-time favorite bands....
The Crystal Ship

Before you slip into unconsciousness
I'd like to have another kiss
Another flashing chance at bliss
Another kiss, another kiss

The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
We'll meet again, we'll meet again

Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
Deliver me from reasons why
You'd rather cry, I'd rather fly

The crystal ship is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back, I'll drop a line

13. Ya know, I love the "Lizard King" and all...
but Jim Morrison was a mean, sloppy drunk.

Just one more mythical voice of a generation that now * has * the world, and are trying like hell to destroy it.

Just like Jim did with his own life...

14. Be fair
Some of our ("We the People") most expressive voices were also highly empathetic and sensitive and very deeply troubled by what they saw. If there is any fault to be found, if you want to find a reason for such tragedies of self-medication and suicides, maybe say they cared too much. Kurt Cobain was another.

15. Jim Morrison, Sandinistas
When I was 15 every wall in my room was covered with Jim Morrison posters. I lived in Rome, and down at the Piazza Navarro on Friday nights the vendors would be selling all kinds of things, including these cool 2-tone posters; the Doors were very popular among the Italian youth (probably still are). I must have had 6 or 7 Morrison posters on the walls.

I also got this excellent poster, that I still have, that says in Italian, "Reagan: Sandinistas will win. Remember Vietnam."
