We've got a big divide in this country and it is going to be hard to cross. I loved the soft-spoken southern female caller who tried to put "Ms. Right Wing" in her place, but...the problem is that so few Americans actually read papers and try to follow the news. Most just listen to "Ms. Right Wing" and think that they are informed. Until the news media becomes more balanced, we've got a tough up-hill climb ahead.

because I'm still reeling from Michael Brown's testimony at the congressional inquiry:

He said, "And while my heart goes out to people on fixed incomes, it is primarily a state and local responsibility. And in my opinion, it is the responsibility of faith-based organizations, of churches and charities and others to help those people."

This is the rationalization for Republicans who are chomping at the bit to get rid of all government assistance programs for the poor. For years I've heard Republicans say that it's the job of the churches to provide "charity", not the government.

No doubt Brown was prompted beforehand to offer that as a viable excuse for not doing his job, but it sure sounded unrealistic. I wonder how many church ladies volunteered to stay in New Orleans or to be flown in by helicopters to offer financial & humanitarian assistance during the first week? Does he really expect us to believe that his heart goes out to people on fixed incomes?
