New way to get cheap groceries!!! Check this idea out.
I ran across this on one of my coupon forums and this is a pretty cool idea if you can budget for it. It is a food ministry open to anyone where you pay $25 a month and you get a box of groceries. The menu is posted on the website every month. They also have packages of meat for a separate price. For example; this month's menu is:
1) 3 lb. Chicken Breast Filets
(1) 2 lb. Pork Riblets
(1) 1 lb. Choice Ground Beef
(1) 3 lb. Breaded Frying Chicken
(1) 1 lb. Ground Turkey
(1) Pkg. Totino's Pepperoni Pizza Rolls
(1) 28 oz. Betty Crocker Crock Pot Classic
(1) 20 oz. Progresso Steak & Mushroom Soup
(1) 3 lb. Apples
(1) 7.5 oz. Macaroni & Cheese
(1) 7 oz. Biscuit Mix
(1) 8 oz. Pasta Salad Mix
(1) 2 lb. French Fries
(1) 16 oz. Cut Broccoli
(1) 16 oz. Corn-on-the-Cob
(1) 12 oz. Breakfast Cereal
(1) Dessert
(1) Dozen Eggs
You bring your own box to the site (usually a church) and they load you up! That is all you have to do. There is no limit on how many boxes you can purchase. Sign up on the website and find where they are distributing; also the date for your pickup.

I think this is a great idea, and considering the possible economic problems ahead, probably something that we all should consider joining; since they get the groceries from a (for me) fairly nearby state and have an independant web of transportation. Also; no tax!!!
I posted this in the Frugal Living Group; please come join us and learn or share frugal tips! Learn about couponing...it can save you a TON of money.
My apologies to the mods if this is a bad place to post this; I put it in the Lounge and it sunk like a stone.

We're just getting started and it might be of interest or spark conversation.

Also, this is a forum where it would definitely spark conversation. Us foodies love to gab.

20. Oh for heaven's sakes!
I should have checked first but didn't. I'm a lamer! :-/

But I did check to see if they have a Colorado chapter. No dice. A good organization, though. They're feeding the hurricane victims and seem like a place to make a donation.

6. Interesting, but for $25
I could probably get more and eat healthier. There are lots of processed foods on that list.

Using the prices of similar products at our cheap grocery store (roughly, because I don't buy everything listed on that list), I came up with a cost of $27.

But I'm much more into cooking from scratch, so for those that either eat out a lot or eat mostly processed foods, that $25 figure is probably a very good deal.

18. I belong to something similar.
Our box costs $28.00. The price went up recently, because of shipping costs.

They have food shoppers who compare the price of the box to buying the items individually in the store. The store cost is usually around $40.00. They compare prices with different stores in the area, and let us know which store they shopped. They also have the services of a volunteer chef who inserts a recipe in each monthly newsletter, so people can get ideas on how to use the products. I have used several of the recipes. The newsletter includes articles about nutrition and storing foods, too.

There is always a good variety of meat, chicken, seafood, fruit and vegetables. There are not that many processed food items in the box each month. Last month, there was tuna helper and frozen chocolate chip cookie dough. Everything else was something you can use to make a meal from scratch. People can use their food stamps if they need to do that. But there is no income requirement for participating. It is just a good way to save.

People these days use processed foods. In many families, both parents work, and it is less time consuming to do that. I try to keep it to a minimum around here, but box dinners are a fact of life.

The name of the organization is SHARE. Ours has a headquarters in Butler, WI. We used to get our boxes through the Hunger Connection in Rockford, IL, but I think our group decided to affiliate with the Wisconsin people. The packages are higher quality.

9. well, it doesn't look like much of a bargain to me, really.
Most on that list is stuff I wouldn't have any interest in eating...
but that's just me...YMMV

11. if you were hungry enough you'd eat it
There were days with wieners and ramen noodles tasted mighty fine to me.

It's a good resource to keep handy. And I like the idea of buying a box for Katrina victims.

19. I understant perfectly, but I can't get over the one time I ate Ramen
'noodles' and got sicker than I ever did in my life. Maybe it was a bad batch but I can't even think about those foul things without retching.

Never again will I ingest that crap.
