BBV at the NYT -- mentions Bev Harris' book
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 05:06 PM by Rumpole
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/technology/AP-Recall-Electronic-Voting.html

"But Bev Harris, author of ``Black Box Voting: Ballot Tampering in the 21st Century,'' which debuted last week online, has documented more than 100 incidents of computer miscounts from Georgia to Washington state. Harris said voters shouldn't presume their votes are cast properly."

1. Yes it is now hitting main stream
Folks as some of you grouse and are so sad, this is actually
good, since now many are going to join us in this fight against
BBV.

On principle I have no problem with technology, but damn it
I don't leave the ATM without a receipt

22. League of Women Voters and BBV
Hi, I read the main page where the League of Women Voters "explain" why it does not want a voter-verified paper trail or paper ballot. All the arguments seem like something a Diebold saleperson might use.
This is an exceprt:

"... And why would we assume that, if the total from a paper count and the total from a machine count are different, the paper count is accurate? Is it not just as easy to tamper with an election by "losing" a couple of paper ballots or miscounting them during a recount? And what about the number of ballots involved? In Florida, in the 2000 presidential election, nearly 6 million votes were cast. Do we really believe that recounting that many paper ballots is more accurate than using certified electronic equipment?"

Anybody know what they are up to ? Their position is based on flawed information, as far as I can tell. Am I missing something here ?
I'm seriously trying to gather information because we are working on a petition to support Holt's bill.
Are there any serious drawbacks to voter-verified paper ballots ? Thanks. -CV

23. There are no serious drawbacks to voter verified paper ballots
The LWV was coopted by their national person, who is definitely not in sync with local chapters on this issue. The way to win that one is to "out" them in public -- every time I've done that, for example, on radio, the local chapters jump to say they don't agree with national.

I agree, they are using manufacturer's talking points.

2. Here's a position from the article I've seen before
Elections officials and vendors say the systems are safe, speed lines at the polls and save hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So I guess we need not fear any personal injury or electrocution from these machines. Whether the vote can be corrupted or not, "Elections officials and vendors" apparently aren't saying.

16. a good question.
he was making a point about how democrats were taking arnie's win a little hard. but he easily spent five minutes or more on DU specifically.

his reference to you was completely oblique. he was reading this post on the air, which mentions you (in a complimentary manner, of course). he simply read your name—i doubt he associated it was anything.

of course this post really quite atrocious, written by a finnish guy who expressed sympathy for people who kill americans around the world(something that every DUer should comdemn), and limboxy proceeded to tell his audience that such statements were tame compared to what's "usually on here" (as if that were possible).

19. I don't think he was expressing sympathy. He was being honest.
Many people around the world DO want to kill Americans.

The vast majority of what he said is the cold, hard, bitter truth. It shames me to know how close to the mark he hit.

Till then many wait, hope and fervently pray to their many Gods that more and more Americans (and it may be your father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband, wife, cousin, uncle, aunt, friend, lover) are killed in conflicts they have wrought on the rest of the world in the false name of "Democracy".

two problems here:

1) most DUers (fortunately) do not agree. i'm glad there are radicals like this in finland, but to say these things—in response to the CA recall election, no less—is a little extreme.

2) Limboxy used this statement to successfully create a straw man. Certainly you will agree that this is one of the angrier statements that's ever been made here at DU, yet Limboxy said it was 'tame' compared to what people usually find here. Limboxy also purposefully neglected to tell us that this guy wasn't an American—which is a lie of omission.

8. An email touting Bev's book
is also making it to the League of Women Voters.

In a local concerned citizens group meeting yesterday, a woman for the LWV brought some emails regarding BBV and had questions.

I was more than happy to answer them for her. I asked that she have all of the LWV members go to www.blackboxvoting.com and educate themselves.

If all goes as planned, I will be traveling to Eugene on the 25th w/the president of our local LWV. She will be my captive audience for three hours. ;-)

Start Keep spreading the news...

9. I was talking with a friend last night and she was pointing out...
the weirdness of some of the voting patterns so I took the opportunity to talk about BBV. I am sure she will look into it more fully now. One by one, if not ten by ten!

"One by one if not 10 by 10" -- like that slogan. Well, with the New York Times maybe we can make it at least two by two.

I noticed the Miami Herald picked it up too, and I happen to know another two articles are in the wings. That, and Chapter 8-9 coming out shortly.

We have so far had about ten thousand downloads of the book!

note -- the aol account has me stymied now, and won't let me in; I can get in the master account but not in my screen name there. Haven't had time to figure it out. So don't use that one, but the yahoo, blackboxvoting.com and talion are all okay.

15. Ten thousand downloads! That is so great!
I planted more seeds tonight in asking the question, " What do you know about GEMS?" It was in response to someone who said the reason Alameda was so slow in reporting was because of the "tamper proof" procedures that had been put into place. Also mentioned that microsoft software is part of the question. I am certain the question and info I provided will be circulated to a whole new group of prospective questioners.

14. What is going on with Amazon?
I went to order it, but it is unavailable. They have removed all the reviews, good ones as well as the fake ones. I wrote them about the fakes being before the book came out, and some guy argued with me it was already out in July.

I told him not to my knowledge.

Is Amazon out of stock?

17. No, it's my slowness and their computer
Edited on Thu Oct-09-03 01:02 AM by BevHarris
They don't sell books from small publishers that aren't in their warehouse yet. However, they were getting so many orders for our book that they called and asked to stock it. Then we missed the ship date and their computer kicked it out.

I plan to have Chapter 8 and 9 tomorrow, but have a granddaughter on the way tonight, so may miss that deadline for the cute tiny deadline on the way.

I'm on my way out the door now.

Bev
