Togo schoolgirls get heads shaved

By Ata Ahli Ahebla
BBC News, Lome

Togolese schoolgirls have been sent home this week to have their heads shaved because teachers say they waste too much time playing with their hair.

Two weeks ago, the education minister urged more moderation in girls' dress and hairstyles in the classroom.

State schools have been accused of acting overzealously by insisting girls have their hair cropped so close.

"I'm angry, I don't want to shave my hair but I have to if I want to resume class," 17-year-old Tina Djobe said.

1. ???
they are overzelous but it does remind me a little of that judge who said this girl could not wear immodest clothing, piercings,or have sex while she was on probation.

3. I don't think they're really addressing the causes
of poor academic achievement here. Whether teenage girls spend too much time on their hair or not, there are surely more important factors at work here. I'd even argue that this measure could make the problem worse by causing resentment among the girls.

6. It is a step forward that Togo lets girls go to school really. Not that
this is justified....

7. stupid as hell!
I did very, very well in school. And I played with my hair the entire time.

My, but there are a lot of stupid people in this world! Funny how they always seem to end up making the rules...

8. Perhaps the problem is with the teachers
who are wasting an inordinate amount of time "watching" the girls play with their hair
