3. We took them down temporarily.
We also got rid of sig lines.

We did it to cut down the load on our server. It seems to be working.

4. Frankly
as much as I like them - I rather prefer the increased responsiveness and speed.

Maybe multimedia could go in a gallery and thus also be more fun cause you can view it all at once when you feel like it.

Loading a huge graphic for a simple page view is like driving a V10 Ford Excursion.

5. Was this because of the server load today, in particular?
?

7. smart move!
i applaud this commonsense move. i was getting sick of people putting huge pictures in their sig lines. i can do without the avatars, too. these "personalizations" add to the general clutter, and distract from what should be central - the meaning and the content of the individual messages themselves. i had turned off signatures for my own viewing, but found that sometimes messages didn't fully make sense because people were referring to things in their sigs, expecting everyone to read them. i think avatars have a similar problem. even though i as an individual can disable them when i view the board, doing so carries the risk of making someone's message less intelligible. because the writer may be expecting everyone to see the avatar.

8. Yep. Big pics in sigs is a no-no
IMHO we need a byte limit on the sigs.

9. Speaking as a dialup user...
... I find the HUGEASS pics in the signature lines annoying as all F***! One thing the DSL & cable users could take into consideration is that SOME parts of America don't have high-speed internet, and the sheer volume of pics in signature lines effectively renders some threads unreadable for those of us on dialup!

/rant off

I feel better for having said that. :hi:
