Seattle Considers Ban on Lap Dances

Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) -- Strippers who venture too near the laps of their dollar-bill-waving patrons have exposed an unexpected prudish streak in this West Coast bastion of tolerance and liberalism.

Fearing a rash of new cabarets after a federal judge struck down the city's 17-year moratorium on new strip clubs, the City Council is planning to vote Monday to impose some of the strictest adult-entertainment regulations of any big city in the country.

No lap dances. No placing dollar bills in a dancer's G-string. And the clubs must have what one council member likens to "Fred Meyer" lighting, a reference to the department store chain.

"It's wiping out an entire industry in Seattle," said Gilbert Levy, a lawyer for Rick's gentleman's club.

And it is WRONG.

6. This is why I am a Sexworker's Rights Activist.
I believe that sexworkers deserve the right to a legal job, good working conditions, fair pay, and freedom from abuse by cops, pimps, and clients.

There is no problem with decriminalized sexwork that is worse than the many problems with illegal sexwork, and 15,000 years of recorded human history show that we will never eradicate sexwork with laws. Therefore if what you want is to reduce the harm done, you decriminalize sexwork! Then you can start doing things like unionization in a sincere fashion and raise the standards for all of these workers!

8. Whats that they say?
Prostitution is the worlds oldest profession?
I view both the war on porn and the war on drugs as entirely illogical (to say the least) even from a govt perspective. For example, imagine how much money the fed gov would gain in prostitution garnered income taxes alone. And isnt money the reason alcohol and cigarettes are legal? Did they learn nothing from prohibition? The whole thing really pisses me off.

Im in total agreement with you on decriminalization. And I had no idea such activists existed. If only everyone could come to their senses about these things. Its so damned frustrating.

9. In places like Amsterdam and Brussels
Prostitution is legal and regulated. Each "shop" has the appropriate license and health certificate displayed next to the price list.

7. The government will keep taking away our freedoms until we stop IT!!!!!
It is time to purge our existing governments at the voting booth and start over.

13. For some reason it is much harder to find progressive candidates
especially on a local level.

There will always be a dominionist creep ready to run for any office available, in any location.

But finding progressives who are willing to run for office is not easy.

I think I will have to start recruiting...

10. More crapola from the unholy alliance
between the religious right and the authoritarian left.

I don't think this would fly in such a progressive city as Seattle without the help of the authoritarian "feminist" left.

12. Thanks - I didn't mean to be so inflammatory
in my rhetoric. I'm quite upset today by another thread where DU'ers are willing to give up liberty for some false sense of security.
