He is the conservative bastion of the US supreme court, a favourite of President Bush, and a hunting partner of the vice-president. He has argued vociferously against abortion rights, and in favour of anti-sodomy laws.
But it turns out that there is another side to Justice Antonin Scalia: he thinks Americans ought to be having more orgies.

Challenged about his views on sexual morality, Justice Scalia surprised his audience at Harvard University, telling them: "I even take the position that sexual orgies eliminate social tensions and ought to be encouraged."

Brings to mind the following exchange heard during the Roberts confirmation hearings:

Senator 1: Judge Roberts, do you wear a Cilice?

Roberts: Only on Sundays, and alternate Tuesdays. But not while I'm at the pool.

Senator 2: Judge Roberts, if you are confirmed, will you be attending orgies with Justice Scalia?

Roberts: Never on Sundays, but I have seen him wearing his Cilice on alternate Tuesdays.

Committee Chairman: Very good, we are very impressed with your candor and good taste in Cilices. I am now confident that we will recommend confirmation to the full Senate.

it was a long time ago so I regret that I can't provide the link but someone said that Thomas had been strictly Catholic, and perhaps Opus Dei, but had divorced and remarried within the last few years and now lists himself as Anglican.

However, I think a majority of the court is Catholic because Kennedy is Catholic and I think one other is as well.

Clarence Thomas is actually a bit hard to pin down. Born Baptist, raised Catholic, he reportedly attended the Episcopalian Church for a number of years, but in the past few years has returned to the Catholic Church.

Googling turns up a lot of speculation but no proof about Roberts' membership in Opus Dei.

Other sources including Christopher Hitchens claim both Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas are members but Opus Dei officials deny it.

Hitchens or Opus Dei...I can't put my trust the word of either. While I have no love for the Church in general and Opus Dei in particular, I will have to regard these reports as anti-Catholic efforts to smear Roberts unless and until better evidence is provided.
