42. Serious question here - Delay is accusing Pelosi of conspiring with
Earle to bring bogus charges against him - he is accusing Pelosi & Earle of committing a serious crime. If those accusations are untrue, wouldn't Delay be guilty of making slanderous statements against Earle and Pelosi for which they could bring suit against him?

50. Public figures are generally unprotected by slander and libel laws
Simply put, the prosecution for such a lawsuit would have to establish that
1) Rep. Delay KNEW the allegations were false at the time of utterance, and
2) made those false allegations with the express intent to harm Pelosi and Earle

which is nearly impossible to do.

Normally, one only has to establish that such a statement had an injurious effect. Public figures have to prove prior intent.

76. I wouldn't count on it ...Delay is not very marketable
In fact most people prior to now, who didn't typically pay attention to politics, probably didn't even know who the hell he was...

Once they see him (whining about being caught no less)they will be turned off in a big way.

He's a PR person's worst nightmare because there is no way to spin that asshole as honest, or likeable.

BTW if wingers bring him up and express sympathy?

Just make sure you let them know he got his start as an AMWAY diamond...that usually resonates with the redneck sheeple who have been burned by AMWAY.

84. But is it not true that one of the rationales for that...
...is that public figures have a platform to defend themselves against false charges, while the non-public figure does not?

Is there any case law where a public figure slanders another public figure?

66. It's possible. It would have to be a libel suit.
I think Pelosi should sue his ass. About time someone called these people on their lies.

The basis for libel with respect to a public figure is (if I remember correctly):

1. Must be published (done).
2. Must be demonstrably false (?)
3. Must injure complainant in some way. (Not sure if Pelosi can show injury, but accusing her of a crime seems like it would qualify)
4. Must be said while knowing it was false with malicious intent (done)

68. That's similar to what Condi Rice said in an Alabama church
during her post Katrina performance. She said that the lord would come on time -- if people wait. Sounds like a similar concept to me.

"The Lord is going to come on time — if we just wait," she said.

I hate Pat Buchanan and think he's a blowhard but he's usually right about the repuke party and yesterday he said Delay is done-cooked-finished.

If you ask me... what really cooked him were his comments the other day about the budget being unable to be cut--the freepers and other retards didn't like that, he has pissed off the bush base.

56. A moderate to liberal Republican.
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 05:09 PM by LiviaOlivia
As in Gov. Nelson Rockefeller of NY. He opposed Nixon and famously flipped him the bird at the 1968? convention.

on edit: He flipped somebody off. can't remember

65. The "Rockefeller Republicans" that I've known have been fiscally
conservative and more oriented toward business in general and bigger business in particular. However, they're not totally heartless.

They are generally moderate to liberal on values and social issues. Many do not oppose abortion, don't get very worked up over gay marriage, and support the Civil Rights Acts and equal opportunity although they seldom approve of much affirmative action.

Really, most of them would be comfortable around many moderate to conservative Dems, but come from long lines of Republicans, mostly from the North.

74. wow! Thank you for this..
I've been trying to put together a 'time line' of sorts that would help me explain how the parties had changed over the years. Your post gave me some missing pieces that made my task much easier. Thanks again!

53. Because it's excrutiatingly difficult -- cf my post #50 upthread
That's why the rw talkshow hosts were able to shit on Pres. Clinton ad nauseum (e.g., how he murdered Vince Foster) and he couldn't do anything about it.

72. Whine, Whine, Whine!
Geez, that Delay can whine. It's everyone's fault but his. Hey Tom, why don't you act like an *adult* for once & stop blaming everyone else for your own shortcomings? You deserve the punishment that's coming to you, & so do the other neocons. You and your friends have spit on this country long enough. You have to go. Deal with it.

88. mentally imbalanced
Edited on Fri Sep-30-05 10:35 PM by Ksec
Imagine a party that puts a man like this in charge.

Hes obviously mentally sick. I dont know the diagnosis for what he has but anyone watching him self destruct while believing hes a righteous dude who is being blackballed by everyone who is conspiring to bring him down can see the reality of his mental illness.. The GOP should take him away to get some help. This guy is in the middle of a mental breakdown.

I watched his last night and it was alarming that he had slipped so far into this mental paranoia.
