Izzy Asper Dies --- Like I care
Seriously, I am going to come of as really disrespectful here...and I'm sorry to those it offends. But this guy was an SOB. He owned many newspapers in Canada and often stuck his nose in when it came to covering the daily news. Editors have been fired for writing colums that show empathy towards Palestine. He has forbidden certain news events to be covered, and has taken journalism and turned it into one big marketing entity. All the while giving the "You don't like it read something else" line. Fuck him...no I won't show respect for a man who spent his life trying to control my brain. Look at the huge article his family had the paper put in to make him look like a big man.

1. Well you should
Because whether you agreed with him or not is irrelevant.

If you didn't like his newspaper...there are plenty of others to read.

He was a poor boy from a tiny town in Manitoba, born in the dirty thirties, his family fled pogroms in the Ukraine, and he went on to build an empire. Not too shabby.

He became the equal, even the superior, of people born with a silver spoon in their mouths and having all the advantages.

When you manage to do better than that...then you can criticize.

8. Oh well...that's an answer to everything eh?
You didn't have to read his newspaper...free country ya know.

And if you think it's so easy to go from poverty to empire...YOU do it.

13. Trust me I'm trying!
;-) But I fail to see how going from poor to rich makes you such a great person ...Jim Pattison was born poor and he's the biggest asshole around

17. Well see it takes more than mouth
and an 'oh yeah' attitude.

It takes work and sweat and sacrifice.

His family fled a pogrom in the Ukraine...do you know what a pogrom is?

He grew up in the 30's and 40's in Manitoba...do you know what that meant? Do you know how hard that would have been??

Of course he supported Israel...not a crime you know.

I don't agree with their policies...but then I'm not Jewish.

But until you can do better...'no comment' is better than uninformed opinions, no matter how 'hip' and 'rad' you think they are.

23. Hey, I became offended by the "Hey Izzy is a good guy" crap I heard all
day... Besides this man never repsected the people's right to properly reported news...if this was england, where there are forty papers to choose from, fine...but it's not and I object to papers that try to meet the North American ideal of an omnicient press on the wrapper only. It makes uus all look foolish

I don't care about that. My problem is his attempted hi-jacking of the news.

33. Then stop calling him an SOB
He highjacked nothing.

We have lots of media info available in Canada. And several networks.

He was simply ONE of them.

And if it was his paper...it was his paper.

He earned it....he ran it his way.

He didn't ask for your approval.

36. Gee, the same could be said of lots of tyrants I can think of.
Do I forfeit my right to criticize them until I have accomplishments to equal theirs? Arnold came from a relatively modest background, but look at him now. Do I have your permission to criticize Arnold, or must I outdo him first?

2. He was a piece of crap. While in Canada, I saw how his papers ..
molded the news. He was Canada's Rupert Murdoch. Would anyone here shed a tear of Rupert's demise? Izzy was a PNAC style fascist, who used his media empire to try and control Canada. Fortunately, he failed, and now he's gone, but Canada is still there!

You can be a reactionary bigot and still be a Liberal...

Hell, Saskatchewan is FILLED with people I call redneck socialists. (Reactionaries who vote NDP because they like the welfare state.)

10. When owners of newspapers put a choke hold on editorials...
they are NOT liberal, imo. I dislike what Asper did re CanWest and found the coverage there to be slanted right.

just "move on"? I don't think so! Any, and I mean any, newpaper or tv news in Canada, even CanWest is heads above any of the mainstream coverage in the US. That does not mean I can't point out what is wrong with it, geesh.

edited: to change it to is in "CanWest is"

Canada doesn't have enough independant media...and no, I don't mean little rags about the latest in communist fashion. I mean good dailes that don't plug the six o clock news hour because it's owned by the same company

owned by different groups.

And TV from all over the world.

Radio...internet.

Canada is a very well connected country, and very well informed.

I thot you wanted to be a journalist?

Better start finding out about this stuff.

Would you work to build a TV network against the competition of state owned one...with deep govt pockets?

Well he did.
