Is this a genuine Cindy Sheehan post?
or the work of a troll?

Because I gotta tell ya... if it is she has lost me forever, and I'd want a new anti-war spokesperson to rally around.

"a little wind, a little rain"? As a native Louisianian I object to such callousness.

Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 04:03 PM by Just Me
,...down. What is the compulsion to engage in such behavior?

It is clear to me that Ms. Cindy was simply frustrated about the media's extreme obsessiveness on a single subject (as usual), failing to cover any of the innumerable relevant events taking place here and around the world that ALSO impact our lives.

What the FUCK is with the HYPER-criticism, extreme anti-tolerance? It's disgusting. :puke:

72. I don't understand what's wrong with what she said.
She speaks of seeing it "this morning", and her post that appeared when I clicked the link was made at ~8PM. The responder to her post made some ugly noises and noted that her post was timestamped, then went on to describe what happened four hours earlier.

But, that means it was 4PM. "This morning" is earlier than 4PM. So, what's the problem?

8. How is this bad?
Don't you think the media coverage of Rita is a bit extreme? you couldn't get another other news on Sat. besides Rita.

Hate to be "callous" but she's 100 percent correct, tell the story but focus on other news too.

And don't spin it.

"am watching cnn and it is 100 percent rita...even though it is a little wind and a little rain...it is bad, but there are other things going on in this country today...and in the world!!!!"

Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 04:13 PM by insane_cratic_gal
She's 100 percent correct... the media coverage of Rita has been extreme! Over the top extreme. The media's duty isn't to only cover the tragedy of the Katrina and Rita but what about the rest of the news that would not be told?

How can change happen if the news is squashed and centered on one place. How can you empower people if you don't get face time? Would you not be pissed off if they didn't cover Katrina at all?

If you read what she said..
little wind and a little rain..it is bad She says It is bad! She also apologizes too.

People are also trying to change the world and inspire this country to grow a spine, sometimes that takes a little bit of news coverage, can you not understand her own frustration with the media ignoring 150,000 plus people marching on DC to cover hurricane Rita? Even if for 10 mins an hour, i'd of been happy with 10mins an hour on the DC march.

Cindy is grieving the loss of her son in an illegal war, and is frustrated that the criminal in the White House gives not one damn about the fact that his international crime of starting a war of agression has taken and is taking hundreds of thousands of innocent lives.

If one needs perfection in a person--especially one who is under the tremendous stress Cindy is under, before he/she can continue to support them, then they have simply made themselves an excuse for never supporting anything. NO TWO PEOPLE ON THIS EARTH agree completely on every issue---if they did, one of them wouldnt' be necessary.

52. She's lying...
I've seen her try to wiggle out of things she's said before, and it didn't sit well, but this one is the last straw.

This sums it up nicely... She said "a little wind, a little rain" while the hurricane was battering Lake Charles. I used to live in Lake Charles, and have friends there. Right now I want Cindy Sheehan to go back to Vacaville and stay there.

Before today I would have just believed you, but.. (3.00 / 7)

Cindy, these posts have time stamps.

when i was watching cnn this morning, that's what it was

Four hours before your post, the eye hit just east of Port Arthur and west of Lake Charles. Between then and two hours after your post, hurricane force winds were tearing through Beaumont and Orange, TX and all through Vermillion Parrish, LA..

Imagine, if you can, what was happening to those poor people while you were watching tv and getting upset about them covering "a little wind and a little rain" rather than your special day.

61. I think you're being a little hard on her.
I'm truly sorry about what the hurricane did to your area, and I agree that it was insensitive of her to say that, but she's not a professional politician, or journalist, or lobbyist. Before she set out against the war she was just another average joe like you or me, or any of us here. Since she is not trained as a highly skilled speaker, she's liable to screw up once in awhile. But I don't think that makes her message any less relevant.

I'm not trying to flame you, I'm really not. I try my best to live and let live on DU, you can search my posts to verify that. So I won't put you down for having this opinion. But, maybe you should wait until the emotional shock of Rita and Katrina have passed before you make any major decisions like this.

36. You, of ALL people then should be able to understand.
If you've ever had a tragedy in your life, you'd know that this can CONSUME your life. If she doesn't seem to care enough about Louisiana, it's because she doesn't, I can guarantee you that. But you know what else? She's not an elected official. She's not anybody really. Just a mom that wants an answer. She doesn't owe you or anyone else a goddamn thing. And if you don't want her to be the anti-war "leader", then worship someone else. That's fine too. I'm sure she's just going to keep doing what she's doing. She didn't start this sending out press releases and begging for donations. I'm sure it won't matter much once it all goes away.

You don't seem to care as much about her tragedy as she does either, so I guess that makes you two just about even, doesn't it?

I've defended her from the get-go, even through other things she's said that didn't sit too well. Sure, she's consumed. That's obvious. But now to the point where she pooh-poohs disasters that are not her own.

I've had it with her. And I'm sure others feel the same.

39. Whether it is genuine or not makes no difference to me...
I don't think whether or not Cindy Sheehan is absolutely perfect in every way affects my view of the courageous work she is doing.

She probably got incensed when she saw the POST-Rita coverage, and no mention of the daily casualties in Iraq, and offended people who had been suffering in the thick of things.

I still think Cindy (I don't believe she means to "have" anyone anyway!) is willing to sacrifice her way of life and her liberty to expose the outrage that is this government. I respect her deeply for that.

And if she did offend some people, she also apologized, which is more than most people in the public eye ever do.

51. One day this weekend, MSNBC showed Rita Cosby's show 3 times.
And every time I switched over to CNN, they were re-running Larry King.

They had plenty of time to cover the marches and just didn't.

I highly doubt Cindy would have the time right now to spend posting on the internet, considering all the other priorities going on in her life at the present time.

58. Exactly. What, Does Kos do extensive background checks on its posters
or something when they sign up to post? What's to keep someone from signing on with her name as their handle and then subtley make her appear to make mistakes? For that matter, what's to keep any one of us signing on there as Karl Rove and carefully sounding like him...kind of...with a few subtle differences thrown in here and there to spin him in a certain direction to make him look like an even bigger asshole than he already is?

Until someone proves to me that it's her, it ISN'T her.

49. If it was Cindy and if she did make that remark,
it does appear callous. But I sure don't think she meant it that way because I myself made a comment Saturday here on DU as to why CNN or MSNBC couldn't do a split screen of both the storm and the D.C. march because they certainly would have if the Michael Jackson trial had still been going on, and I never for a second meant for it to diminish the importance of the storm coverage. And nobody flamed me.

I think now that this came about yesterday, there will be a lot of little lugs dropped here and there to try to make Cindy look like the clown that karl rove said she was, and I think we shouldn't swallow that bait.

56. You know, at first I kinda agreed with the OP
at first glance, the comment does seem a bit callous. For about 5 seconds.

Think about it.

Yes, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita were horrible disasters that are causing great grief to hundreds of thousands of people. But look at the news coverage. Hour upon hour of breaking news.

Now compare that to the Iraq war. Specifically, the dead innocent Iraqis, our dead soldiers, dead soldiers from other countries. How many people are suffering because of their deaths? People from all over the world. Literally millions. How much air time are they getting? Practically none.

I'm not trying to downplay the suffering that's going on in the Gulf Coast. But when you compare the two, Cindy's got a point.

63. She's bought into her own hype
A few weeks ago, at the beginning of a scheduled NPR interview, she suddenly announced "I have two minutes". The NPR interviewer was incredulous, as you can expect. "You, uh, have 'two minutes'?" It was like Ms.Sheehan thought she was royalty, or something.

Her views on Bush and the war are one thing; her behavior and some of her wacko leftist friends like Malik Rahim are quite another. I liked some of the other anti-war mothers better.

I had almost forgotten what humans do when they make a mistake. Huh, imagine that - a conscience. So very rare these days, an apology, hell, even admitting a mistake - these things are about as foreign to the chimprimator as human suffering or "hard work."

83. She was basically right...
Sheehan may not have put it as well as she might have, but I generally agree with what she said. She also apologized for how her post came across and attempted to clarify what she meant.

The media was covering Rita like it was the end of the world instead of just 1 of a number of important stories.

I'd say Sheehan was a little frustrated, and was just speaking off the cuff the way most of us probably do from time to time. Spend a lot of time planning a big event, and watch it marginalized because the media are hoping for lots of carnage to photograph and videotape (and yes, I've no doubt the media were indeed hoping for more devestation as it's good for ratings)....and well, I can see how she might have been a little irritated.

I actually find it a little refreshing that Sheehan takes the time to interact with regular Americans on message forums. Lots of people who reach "celebrity" status wouldn't even bother chatting with us little people.

88. If Rita had hit as a cat 5 it would have been akin to the end of US/world
Maybe the media hyped the storm-maybe they didn't.

A cat 5 would have been the start of a true to life *oil storm* (and yeah I know that was an FX film)

I don't hold Cindy Sheehan to any supreme standard as she is just an ordinary person...I think her remark was not well thought out, but she has since apologized and that is fine with me.

But let's not forget that bush's policies and corrupt behavior are not just a problem in regards to Iraq (as in invading other countries because he wants to make up shit to invade them--that is albeit satan like behavior of epic proportions)

BUT with that said if we don't get that ASSHOLE out of power Katrina and Rita could be coming to a theatre near us soon.

Look at how far these super storms are going inland! We are talking hundreds of miles--is that the norm?

People at the other end of this country are feeling Rita or are about to and this is not normal.

JMO global warming is very scary and has been escalated by bush policies and we need to be able to lay all the blame for many things at bush's feet--Iraq, global warming, corruption, cronyism all of it!

The protest is important but IMO the condition of the globe is just as important. It's not an either or deal because it's all horrifying.

90. If Rita looked like it was hitting as a Cat 5...
..then I am sure Sheehan would not have made those comments.

It was pretty clear that Rita was not going to be a super storm upon landfall.

It just seems to me that Sheehan was basically correct, though she probably could have chosen a better way to state her point. She apologized for any insensitivity, and I don't see the need to beat her up for saying the same thing many of us were probably thinking (or at least I was thinking it).

I've made lots of statements that could have been phrased better. She is taking the time to communicate on a message forum in real time. She spoke off the cuff, apologized for how her comments came off, and has since continued her fight against the occupation of Iraq.

I was not offended by her comments and believe we should cut her some slack. Just my opinion anyway.

ok folks, she was wrong... very much wrong

Was the demonstration the most important story of the weekend? NO... as shocking as it is to most people over here, life and property do take precedence... and natural disasters involve preciseely that

OTOH, the press should have covered this 70% Rita, 20% demo, 10% other things... but she was quite insensitive, apology or not, and that will only help to spread the meme that we don't care about the country.

Oh and I expect the usual crowd to attack and attack furiously, and no I will not back down or take cover.

Did you know about Tal Afar?

Posted on Sunday:

"...In the meantime, the US has now attacked another Sunni city, this time the Turkmen stronghold of Tal Afar. In the continued "scorched earth" policy of the US military in the Sunni areas, a joint US/ Iraqi (mostly Kurdish) force appears to have levelled entire neighborhoods in Tal Afar, a northern Turkmen city, making most of its 200,000 inhabitants refugees living in squalid tent camps or with friends and relatives elsewhere. The operation yielded relatively few arrested terrorists.

There is a news blackout on Tal Afar imposed by the US and the Iraqi authorities. This move is draconian and anyway unnecessary, since the American cable news channels have already imposed a global news blackout in favor of playing "Weather Channel" 24/7. Members of a Red Crescent delegation reached Tal Afar, but had their cell phones confiscated, were told to distribute aid in a remote and little known part of the city, and ended up mainly giving help to the displaced persons in their tent settlements: ' Hasan Bal, a member of the Red Crescent team that went to Tal Afar, stressed that theirs was a very difficult mission. ''The people and especially the children in Tal Afar are living in miserable conditions. Their conditions are indescribable. It is practically impossible not to cry for them,'' noted Bal. '

Basically, if all the US military in Iraq is capable of is operations like Fallujah and Tal Afar, then they really need to get out of the country quick before they drive the whole country, and the region, into chaos.... "

I agree with Ms. Sheehan that Rita should NOT have been the only story on the national media. It was a big story but we are all affected by other events. (How many died in Iraq that week?)

We had full time Rita coverage on several local TV stations for almost a week.
