Congress to vote on Fate of Endangered Species
www.defenders.org

America's national symbol was once almost lost forever. But today, the bald eagle once again soars over our nation ... thanks in large part to the Endangered Species Act. Now the Endangered Species Act is under attack, and we need your help to save it.

Forward this message to a friend...

Yesterday the influential House Resources Committee voted 26-12 to advance a bill that would severely undermine the Endangered Species Act. The legislation, introduced earlier this week by Representative Richard Pombo (R-CA), would dismantle key protections for wolves, bald eagles and other endangered wildlife.

The full House could vote on this bill as soon as Tuesday. Please send a message to your Representative right now urging him or her to vote against the Pombo bill.

Since 1973, only nine out of the 1,800 plants and animals protected by the Endangered Species Act have been declared extinct. But Representative Pombo’s bill would take a wrecking ball to the law’s astonishing record of success.

Representative Pombo’s bill would undermine the Endangered Species Act and our national commitment to protect endangered and threatened wildlife. It would...

Sharply diminish habitat protection
Cut wildlife experts out of the loop in determining whether agency actions would harm endangered plants and animals
Weaken the role of science in decisions that affect endangered species
Make taxpayers pay developers to refrain from killing endangered plants and animals
This outrageous bill must be stopped, but we need your help to do it.

Help ensure that special creatures like gray wolves, sea otters, and grizzly bears are around for future generations. Please send a message to your Representative right now urging him or her to oppose the bill.

So far, more than 140,000 wildlife supporters from across the country have spoken up for strong federal protections for our endangered wildlife and the special places where they live. Won’t you join them?

As always, thank you for working to protect our vanishing wildlife and the habitat it needs to survive. Together we can win this fight.

Sincerely,

1. NO posts to this thread?
You've got to be kidding me. Once upon a time, the environment (which many species are critical to the health of) was a primary concern for democrats.Once again, the GOP want to put big developers and corporate interests ahead of the greater good.

Time to call your reps. Silence implies consent.

It angers and saddens me how those running the government couldn't care less on the fate of our endangered animals. :(

They won't be happy until nothing is left.

Yes, I signed the petition and am sickened that its come to this this.

Years ago I worked very hard on drafting municipal protected species protective legislation which included the bald eagle. You have no idea how depressing this is for me.

9. Amen to that!
Why are so many people blind to this fact-even on our side?

A thread about a bigoted school throwing out a child because her parents are gay gets hundreds of responses, yet extinction and the eventual demise of most life on earth? Yawn.

15. I feel sad I was born into a petri dish with no way to escape
Just like bush, the rest of us down the line of ape will exterminate one another because we are too stubborn to get along with others. A vicious lot we are. We cannot find compromise because we can't all even ponder if and why a solution is needed for even fundamental things (like peace for one).

We are on a mad train headed straight to hell, and picking the correct amount of daisies before the end won't matter I would say

20. BIG Kick and signed!
Unfortunately, I've had the same problem with environmental threads on DU...typically drop like a stone. Yet this is without a doubt the most important issue of our time -- trumps everything else I can think of with the possible exception of total nuclear annihilation. What gives?

With regards to the neo-cons: These people will stop at nothing to destroy any and all roadblocks to making more profits...nothing else is sacred but stuffing their bloated bank accounts.

24. Our new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court thinks congress lacks authority
even to accomplish the enforcement of the Act. Welcome back to the 1930! Judge Roberts isn't a right-wing activist judge -- heavens no! -- he just thinks that all the cases which have interpreted the commerce clause to grant congress broad regulatory authority over the past 60 years have been wrong.

Unless we do something. If there's anyone around to realize.

Their so-called alternative called for the elimination of criticial habitat designation, without which recovery is unlikely.
