1. Gold Star is any family who has lost someone.
Gold Star for Peace is a subgroup of that.

3. Gold Star simply means they have lost a family member in combat.
Like the military itself, Gold Star families cover the full spectrum of political beliefs.

During the Viet war they were given a decal to display in the window.
I wonder if that's still a custom.

9. Still a custom.
The Blue Star/Gold star thing can be traced back to WW1. My wife displayed a Blue Star in the window for me during Operation Iraqi Liberation. I'll show it for our future Son In Law when he deploys.

13. Good to hear.
I know of two cases where a mother lost 5 sons to war, the Civil War and WW2 (the Sullivan brothers).

14. Gold Star Families for Peace is a different group...
From Gold Star Families. And this has caused some to allege that Cindy Sheehan was lying about being a Gold Star Mom, as she is not a member of Gold Star Families. But they don't have any monopoly on saying who qualifies to grieve for a lost son in a war based on lies, though they certainly mean to say that Ms. Sheehan has no such right.
