do chimpy's defenders even listen to themselves?
From cnn.com's story on the "pro-war" demonstration today (attended by fewer people than show up at the average repub wedding):

Melody Vigna, 44, of Linden, California, said she wants nothing to do with Sheehan and others at nearby Camp Casey, an anti-war site set up to honor her son, Casey, who was killed in Iraq.

"Our troops are over there fighting for our rights, and if she was in one of those countries she would not be able to do that," Vigna said.

Don't you just love these folks that say that our soldiers are fighting for Cindy's right to protest and therefore Cindy shouldn't protest?

"No matter what your ideals are, our sons and daughters are fighting for our freedom," said Marilyn Faatz, who drove from New Jersey to attend the rally. "We are making a mockery out of this. And we need to stand united, but we are not."

Truer words were never spoken, but I don't think she realized what she said.

6. Besides the obvious, I don't even get the term >>
"Our troops are over there fighting for our rights"

What?...if we don't kill and maim a pack of Iraqi's, they're going to swim across the ocean and take away our rights?

8. I am so sick to death of the "fighting for our rights" propoganda...
I don't think Saddam could've done as much to curtail our rights and shred our constitution as the bushies have done in his wildest imagination. I would respect their position much more if they said "Our troops are over there fighting for the rights of Iraqis so that one day, they too will be able to speak out against any policy they believe is wrong". Of course that's not true either, but shit, it's closer thant that "fighting for our rights crap":banghead:

12. damn straight
The other day I saw a column in which someone argued that we shouldn't do anything special to mark September 11 because "the whole point of terrorism is to invoke terror, take away our freedoms". I just wanted to scream. The terrorists that flew planes into the WTC and Pentagon on September 11 don't give a rat's ass about our "freedom". Do these people think that if we announced that the Bill of Rights was repealed and everyone is forced to attend the Church of the government's choice on Sunday and all skirts had to be below the knee they'd say, "cool", we got we want? No. They don't like our policies. And they think by attacking us they can get us to change those policies. What they've succeeded in doing is getting us to take away some of our freedoms, thanks to the Patriot Act and heaven knows what comes next.

10. "They're fighting for your freedom of speech, so shut up about it."
Actually, it seems that the right wing care only about their OWN freedom of speech, and not anyone else's. :eyes:

11. Great point...
and I love that one freeper talking point "she should go over to those other countries and try that." Funny, I seem to remember seeing many pictures of protestors in other countries over the years. It's as if they think America is the ONLY place on earth where we can dare utter a word or two in free speech. Americacentrism, for sure.

13. Wow, woo hoo!
I am sooo glad to be here.

I have never in my life seen so many dedicated, well-informed, and frankly SMART people all in one place!!! You guys are amazing. I am in AWE of the wealth of knowledge here.

I had no idea the wellspring of knowledge available. I read the paper most of the time and watch the news a few nights a week. Then I found DU and it's like a whole other world, all of the stuff that is kept from us. And you are all on the ball, you are equipped with articles and interviews and you have exposed things for the whole wide world like never before.

I am just blown away. Seriously, you guys are absolutely mind-bogglingly sharp and I can't wait to get my friends to sign up so they can see the truths that are hidden if not for all of you.

You speak truth to power, and it is a daunting task, but you fearlessly take it on. In this kind of dictatorship it takes strong men and women to speak their minds, but you put fear aside and do it anyway.

That makes all of you heroes. You really are.

Anyway, you have opened up a whole new world to me that I can't wait to be a part of now that I have found you. I have been afraid to really, I mean REALLY speak up, until now.

Rock onward, and keep doing your great work! I am astonished, amazed, astounded, and forever impressed by all of the truly historic and groundbreaking things you do here.

DU rocks, DUers rock, and you will be remembered for many years to come!!!

16. welcome, and we are happy to have you here. my favourite motto is
"illegitimati non carburundum"-- bastardized latin that translates loosely as, "don't let the bastards grind you down."

Yup. I've had quite a few of them say that to me. I usually just laugh in their faces.
