22. When you visit a site with your browser
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 11:11 AM by Jose Diablo
to view an image for example, it's possible for the 'host' server of that image to view details about who is visiting the site, or certain details associated with the Internet Port (IP) assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to your computer.

Depending on how your computer is set-up it is possible to in some cases to even get a name. Again it depends on how you set-up your 'puter and what it will allow the server to 'see'.

Thus 'IP mining' refers to a process of providing a link that others will click on and then trying to gather information about the visitors.

If you don't want others to see you, there are free sites that act as a go between for your 'puter/IP and the net when you surf, so you can remain anonymous.

For example:

http://www.anonymizer.com/

At the top of this site is the free anonymizer. Click on that when you want to surf and you remain anonymous no matter where you go.

Edit to add: Once a IP is obtained, the next step would be a port scan of your specific IP. The port scan would be looking for an 'open' windows port that can be exploited to gain access to your 'puter. Read files, deposit an executable program for example to record your keystrokes to find out what you are doing. Generally though those that would do this would be associated in some way with the national security. But a keystroke logger in a company computer can be a disaster for a company that is trying to keep secrets about their business plans. If a non-government person deposits a keystroke logger you can be sure you been had.

To stop a port scan once somebody has your IP erect a 'firewall'. Zone Alarm makes a pretty good free one, look here:

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

There is a free one there also.
