KPLF-TV -- Lake Charles Is Now Off The Air
KPLF-TV -- Lake Charles, Lousiana, was providing live coverage of hurricane Rita as the northern eyewall passed overhead.

The broadcast suddenly stopped about five minutes ago. The announcers explained before the broadcast was interrupted that they were surprised that the 400-foot tower nearby with microwave dishes was still holding up.

It's seems likely that some part of their transmission infrastructure was damaged by hurricane Rita.

2. Microwaves Took A Hit
They were broadcasting from the local hospital. They deserted the studios/transmitter and were relaying their signal back. Lots of signals bouncing around...and I would suspect some sort of power failure at the transmitter. This happened with the WWL and WDSU feeds during Katrina...but they soon came back up.

Considering one gentleman said the winds were clipping regularly around 90 it's amazing this stuff stayed up as long as it has. Hopefully all are safe.

Peace...

Edited on Sat Sep-24-05 04:05 AM by Zinfandel
it is...

Anything, so this can be THE story...Total hilatiry...except, more important...there's a huge protest tomorrow in DC, LA, SF and Seattle (PLEASE be ther) to protest the killing and dying... Tomorrow, But, that will be ignored!

Because of this sillyness! Gee, there's rain!

75 mph winds... Yet these fucks insist, (their jobs) it's oh my, devestating!

What a hoax!

7. Sillyness?
It's as if you're implying that the American people can only handle one issue at one time.

One big story at a time, please. If an earthquake in San Francisco happened tomorrow, we should immediately stop talking of protests, or the Iraq War, or the back-to-back major hurricanes in the Gulf.

There's nothing silly about this hurricane, in my opinion. It doesn't "take away" from today's protest.

Everything is relative. Absolutely everything is cumulative.

8. Wrong.

Rita is still a Category 3 Hurricane with Winds of 120 MPH and Gusts to 150 and she is showing not much weakening as she makes landfall. Lake Charles is being decimated ,and many towns in East Texas that people thought were safe for refuge are getting pummeled.

This is an extremely dangerous storm.

You are being highly insensitive, and as far as the strength and devastating power this storm has, you don't know what you are talking about.

11. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING trivial about a category 3+ hurricane

On edit, I meant to reply to post #6

Millions of people have been evacuated, I am guessing that hundreds of thousands of people have already lost their homes, with the possibility of hundreds of thousands more becoming homeless. And that is IF the storm does not stall out over the Texas - Louisiana border. If it does stall out, major flooding could happen far inland due to exorbitant amounts of rain.

The potential for loss of property and life in a storm of this magnitude is unfathomable.

Yes, the protest in DC is big news, however the hurricane is a more urgent situation.

13. Glad you're laughing.
Katrina had dropped down to a weak Cat 3 by landfall, too, and people were laughing at coverage then, too.

In 1957 Audrey hit just about where Rita did. The storm surge was only 15 foot, but due to the low lying swampy nature of Louisiana at that point, the surge carried inland 25 miles at places and killed over 400 people. The region has grown since then, obviously, but it is still only a foot or two above sea level.

KHOU in Houston has a reporter in Beaumont in a hotel on I-10 that has water flowing through the lobby. That sounds similar to what happened with Katrina.

Laugh when you see for sure how much damage has been caused. We all hope you're right. But so far there's nothing hilarious about the local reports coming from the region.

Second, try to compose a coherent post where at least 50% of the words are correctly spelled.

A 120 MPH hurricane with 150 MPH gusts is not a hoax. Maybe you'd like to sit one out and see what "hilarity" ensues.

24. I take it that you don't live anywhere near landfall....
...I guarantee you that you would be singing a different tune if you lived in the area that Rita impacted.

The only "hoax" I'm currently seeing on this board is your pretense of caring for others while denigrating the effects of Rita on thousands of families.

17. I hope she is safe and sound
You haven't heard anything in a day and a half? Yikes! It appeared that a great deal of the traffic on one of the roads they showed on CNN yesterday led to Lake Charles and the traffic was backed up for miles and miles. I hope those people, as well as your daughter, got out of there before last night.

Sending good thoughts to you and your family.

18. Thanks for the good thoughts.
I'm hoping for the best. She's with good, level-headed people who brought air mattresses, water, food, etc.

I just hope the roads weren't backed up.

19. A bit of an update.
I can't get through on any of the three cell phone numbers my daughter's little group gave me.

However, one number was apparently incorrect and I got a nice man in a neighboring town, who tells me they are hanging in right now with 70 mph winds. He told me folks who evacuated yesterday are likely OK, and there were no reports of clogged roadways.
