I read today that the hose nozzles on the military gas trucks they
sent out today in Texas were too big to fit into civilian vehicles. They had to wait until nozzles that fit could be flown in. ISN'T THIS SOMETHING SOMEONE COULD HAVE THOUGHT OF BEFOREHAND? Couldn't they possibly have taken nozzles from the gas stations that had no gas rather than waiting for an airplane from god knows where? After this spectacle we have decided that we will never evacuate and will just take our chances at the local shelter.

1. Couldn't they cut a plastic bottle and make a funnel?
Where the hell is MacGyver when you need him?

6. Or gone to the hardware store and bought some. I really think
using a funnel would be a safety issue though and this evacuation has already burned enough people. I saw where people were putting gas in juice bottles or anything they could find.

2. That would explain why none of my evacuating friends even
saw those trucks, which they still believe are the figment of someone's imagination.

4. They were probably relying on the regular TxDOT
"roadway helpers" -- whom I imagine were totally overwhelmed.

Hey, where are you at? Did you evacuate?

9. Yes, I did.
My experience was not as harrowing because we decided to just get out on general principle, LOL.

We aren't as far north as we'd like, but it'll do. Thanks for asking!

3. Surprise, Surprise!
I believe the military uses oversize nozzles to keep members of same military from filling up with taxpayer gas.
Guess they have never heard of funnels.

Sheesh.

8. No, I'm sure it's so they can fill the tanks real fast under enemy
fire. No one in our Armed Forces would steal or torture people.

I think funnels would be risky due to fumes.

19. Plastic funnels generate static electricity when gas flows over them
Static electricity plus gasoline equals big explosions.

And yes, the oversized fill nozzles are to speed fueling.

7. Good thing Texas isn't Louisiana.
:eyes: My dad called night before last and wanted to make sure we were alright and weren't going to be a bush** evacuee. I told him that would never happen to me! He was glad to hear it. He hates bush** with a passion!

11. I wonder if they were trying to fill the bus with a funnel when it blew up?
Bet we won't find out if that is the case.

15. And just why
would they want to put gasoline into a bus that runs on diesel?

17. No, no, you see those big trucks that you see bringing gas to the stations?
Well some of those big tanker trucks actually carry diesel inside of them. Thats how they transport it to the gas stations to sell it to buses and semi-trucks. I would have thought you knew that?

20. I'm well aware of how they get diesel
to the fuel stations.
However , this thread is about the military gasoline trucks dispatched to help stranded evacuees.

What would make you think they'd want to put that in a bus with a funnel no less?

and if you were thnking they dispatched diesel tankers to fill all those cars, why would you think filling them with a funnel might cause a fire?

diesel is not very volatile and would not cause a flame unless it was poured on something very hot.

gasoline on the other hand, is extremely dangerous if not handled with utmost care.

12. God I feel old.....
the hoses the military uses were from the pre-unleaded days. When the unleaded engines came out, they had a smaller hole for the gas nozzle to go into so ppl would not used the then cheaper leaded gas.

I would bet the military are still using the old leaded nozzles...

In 1967-68 we were eating food out of boxes with dates like 1942 on them.

21. Again, Military Hummers run on diesel
It would not be a good idea to put Gas into a Hummer.

unless you have one of the Civilian versons that have the engine swapped for a gasoline engine.
