I for one would rather the nominee get the votes of Democrats who had previously been disenfranchised, or had never been (politically) involved enough to care in the first place.

while I think Clark may stand a better chance at garnering votes from the former group, I believe Dean has a much better chance at garnering votes from the latter. I also think that Dean would get more votes from the former than Clark would get from the latter.

I think Clark will get more republican votes, and Dean will get more non-politically active Dem votes. But the difference in republican votes between Clark and Dean is greater than the difference in non-politically active democrat votes between Clark and Dean.

Why? Because the pissed off republicans will vote for Clark, but stay home if it's Dean. The pissed off non-politically active dems are so angry at Bush that they'll vote for ABB. This anger will mean that the disparity between Clark and Dean with respect to nonpolitically active dem votes will be smaller.

Thus, the net effect is that Clark gets more votes when you tally up the total. Also, Clark is liberal enough to appeal to a large part of the Dem base.
