Damn it....fundies are worshipping "March of the Penguins"...
On the conservative Web site WorldNetDaily.com, an opponent of abortion wrote that the movie "verified the beauty of life and the rightness of protecting it."

At a conference for young Republicans, the editor of National Review urged participants to see the movie because it promoted monogamy. A widely circulated Christian magazine said it made "a strong case for intelligent design."

The movie is "March of the Penguins," and of all the reactions it has evoked, perhaps the most surprising is its appeal to conservatives. They are hardly its only audience; the film is the second highest grossing documentary of all time, behind "Fahrenheit 9/11."

But conservative groups have turned its stirring depiction of the mating ordeals of emperor penguins into an unexpected battle anthem in the culture wars.

:puke:

Perfectly good movie that they have to go and taint...

There's a little write-up at Salon.com about how misguided the right wing zealots are about this particular movie. I think they are just plain dumb.

Whatever it was, that bird was a jerk---interferring with god's plan for baby penguins. They should be born and then die cause of global warming.

6. So what? Why is someone else's beliefs about a film a problem
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 06:49 PM by HereSince1628
I _can_ understand how their interpretation of the constitution can impact me, but I don't understand how their interpretation of a film (right or wrong) really matters.

8. I don't really care what they believe about it...
the whole "pick and choose" concerning science is the one thing that gets me.

And, well, I loathe fundamentalism of any kind. To think that I have something in common with then is mildly irritating.

7. Penguins remind me of Republicans.

They all line up and waddle behind their leader, no matter what.

Of course, that's unfair to penguins.

Lemmings?

Okay, not fair to lemmings, either.

of Americans (and tens of thousands of Iraqis) since he stole the office in 2000, how in the effing hell can they claim they 'verify the beauty of life and the rightness of protecting it'??????????????????

10. THere's nothing explicitly conservative in "March of the Penguins"
it makes me :puke: every time I hear of conservatives throwing innocuous little movies into the middle of the culture wars, as if by claiming everything "good" about our culture for themselves they can somehow paint us as evil. Well damnit I liked March of the Penguins too, and I happen to think its a beautiful treatise on the weird and wonderful directions EVOLUTION has led the various creatures of our planet.

13. send melting icecap and stranded penguin stories
to that website.

Maybe with a polite suggestion that, if protecting life is as important as the writer says, perhaps they would like to channel that passion into saving the penguins habitat.

14. Surprising that the Freepers like it
because it's about serial monogamy. The penguins remate every year.
They form a community to benefit all. They aren't about every penguin for itself.

Just goes to show you how little they understand science. They pervert everything.

Of course, why should you bother your beautiful minds with reality? You're banking on your Fairy Tale to come true ... BTW, wasn't Jeebus supposed to have returned shortly after he died. He's about 2,000 years late, isn't he?

They're in love. They're gay. They're penguins... And they're not alone.

By Cristina Cardoze

Wendell and Cass, two penguins at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island, Brooklyn, live in a soap opera world of seduction and intrigue. Among the 22 male and 10 female African black-footed penguins in the aquarium's exhibit, tales of love, lust and betrayal are the norm. These birds mate for life. But given the disproportionate male-female ratio at the aquarium, some of the females flirt profusely and dump their partners for single males with better nests.

Wendell and Cass, however, take no part in these cunning schemes. They have been completely devoted to each other for the last eight years. In fact, neither one of them has ever been with anyone else, says their keeper, Stephanie Mitchell.</snip>

<snip>At the Central Park Zoo, Silo and Roy, two male Chinstrap penguins, have been in an exclusive relationship for four years. Last mating season, they even fostered an egg together.

"They got all excited when we gave them the egg," said Rob Gramzay, senior keeper for polar birds at the zoo. He took the egg from a young, inexperienced couple that hatched an extra and gave it to Silo and Roy. "And they did a really great job of taking care of the chick and feeding it."

But the partnership of Wendell and Cass adds drama in another way. They're both male. That is to say, they're gay penguins.</snip>

Penguins 'top' French films in US

A documentary about penguins has become the most successful French film at the US box office, reports have said.
The March of the Penguins has sold $66.8m (£36.6m) in tickets since its June release overtaking Luc Besson thriller The Fifth Element.

The documentary is favourite to be named as France's entry for the best foreign language film at the Oscars, according to Screen International.

It follows Emperor penguins walking to their breeding ground in Antarctica.

19. LOL....Look at this!
from Aravosis:

snip

Indeed, Coffin misleads about the very few facts the film offers up. The movie states at the very beginning that emperor penguins have lived in the Antarctic for millions of years; Coffin ignores that and says only that they've been coming to this particular breeding ground for "thousands of years."

What's truly hilarious is their assertion that emperor penguins represent a lovely example of monogamy. Here's what you actually see/learn in the film:

*Emperor penguins mate once, guard the egg until the baby is hatched and then -- once the season is over -- never see each other or the child again.

*Emperor penguins stand by and don't raise a flipper when their children are attacked by a predator -- one baby penguin is killed and taken away (survival of the fittest, kiddo!), a scene that makes the movie a tad too graphic for young and sensitive children.

*An emperor penguin who loses her egg is seen trying to steal the egg of another.

*Emperor penguins take a different lover every mating season.

These facts are the central focus of the film. To watch this film and somehow see it as an ode to monogamy is to ignore the entire film. It's sad and funny and ludicrous to imagine these people struggling to pull out a "Christian" message and morality from a nature film. They can do it -- if they ignore 95% of the film and the facts. Saying "March of the Penguins" celebrates monogamy is like saying "Wedding Crashers" celebrates the institution of marriage.

to develope the flap of fatty tissue needed to protect their eggs. So how so those boobs wrap their brains around that one???

AND why would god tell noah to save a flightless bird?
