Re: The bridge to Gretna. The same bridge where 5 people were killed?
Recent reports are revealing that the Gretna police & sheriffs departments closed off the bridge refusing people attempting to flee New Orleans when there was no food or water, at one point shooting warning shots over their heads.

http://www.washtimes.com/upi/20050908-112433-4907r.htm

Last week, after major evacuations were happening and federal assistance arrived in NO, there was a report of 5 people being shot on a bridge.

The reports coming out were very suspicious simply because the official story changed at least three times within a day.

The first report was that 5 contractors had been shot by local police as they were crossing a bridge to work on the levy.

The second report was that 5 contractors had shot by "a gang of armed thugs".

The third and official story was that contractors who were crossing the bridge to work on the levy were shot at by an unknown source. They called the police, the police came and shot 5 "gunmen".

Here is one source as the story was morphing:

My question is this. Is this the same bridge as the one that was denied to the people of New Orleans as they attempted to flee?

The story of what happened the day on the bridge when 5 people were shot and killed seemed off as myself and others watched it change. Has anyone found out anymore about the 5 dead that is different from the official story? If it is the same bridge, does the actions of the Gretna PD give cause for more questions about the shooting death of the 5 people?

1. I'd like to know more about this as well.
I find it highly suspicious. And if five 'thugs' were shot, why do we not know their identities?

2. I think it was a different bridge...
The early stories about the contractors say it was the Danziger Bridge (which goes over the 17th street canal) where they were all shot (and later it was "looters" who were shot), while the Gretna Police had shut the Crescent City Connection Bridge.

But who knows, the way the stories keep morphing.

3. I have heard that there is only one existing bridge out of NO
I don't know if that is true. I would first like to confirm if this is or is not the same bridge.

5. Yes, I was wondering what the resolution of this story was. Still wonder.

6. No.
No.

The bridge to Gretna crosses the Mississippi River. It's one of the principal routes out of the city, from downtown New Orleans onto the Westbank.

The 5 people killed were on the Danziger Bridge, that crosses an industrial canal inside New Orleans, itself.

As somebody born and raised on the Westbank of New Orleans here's something else that's appalling about the situation...

Gretna is no paradise. It's an OK suburb, but it's certainly no Greenwich or anything like that. It has its own bad neighborhoods.

But this is even worse:

The Crescent City Connection (the bridge in question) doesn't even touch down in New Orleans... it actually touches down in Algiers, another ward of the city of New Orleans, itself. You have to cross about a quarter mile or so of Algiers to get into Gretna... so Gretna police, as far as I can see, had no authority, whatsoever, to block people from crossing.

7. Thank you for all of the info
I have been googling to find the basic question about the bridge(s), but I lack googling skills :silly:

The outragious behavior and questions about what happened and *is* happening continues.

I am sorry about your hometown. Not only what has happened to it, but what they may do to it.

8. Wrong bridge. The bridge shooting happened well inside NO.
