Current body count?
Tonight on the news 9/13/05 I heard that the body county in NO went up dramatically, but didn't get the numbers. What is the current total?

6. That's about right...no autopsies...mass burials...dispersed population...
death toll is anything "the authorities" want to say...

Augusto Pinochet only wishes he had that much control...

IANAL, but state law prob requires ID.
They can't just get rid of the bodies without IDing them. Family and friends will want to know. Insurance companies *need* to know. There are all sorts of reasons, legal and otherwise, for them to do a full accounting. If they didn't do that, there would be an injunction requiring it faster than you could say "Jack Spratt ate no fat."

8. This situation is between the extremes
Sure, in a normal situation with a small number of bodies in the US, I would trust their count.

In Iraq, obviously not, but of course, they won't even do them there.

In some ways, this is inbetween.

It is of course possible to do as many ID's and counting as is necessary to handle insurance and such things, but the people who died are the people least likely to have life insurance.

And, of course, they don't have to release that number honestly.

If we can't count them to count votes honestly, I am not going to trust them on this count.

And of course, there are legal reasons to count the votes honestly.

10. they've scattered destitute people who do not trust the authorities
all over the country. These are the only people who would complain about most of the dead. "Missing" hides a world of sins.

12. In between, but they still have to follow rule of law
I imagine the law requires death certificates. They will have to do that, at least.

11. I hope you are right
because the alternative is appalling. I am not at the point where I can ascribe that level of evil to the authorities.

But I do think I might be in the minority here at du.

2. Some places are still under 15' of water...
And I expect major changes to this count.

NOW, do understand that a Bush family friend runs the company doing the counting, and that this firm has been accused illegal body dumping in the past. I do not expect an honest count from them.

3. Good Question
I keep hearing how it's going up the first week, then Bush blocks media coverage of bodies, and then it was immediately going down.

We all certainly hope it is low in the end, but only honestly low.

A dishonest low number is of course worse than an honest high one.

5. 400-plus confirmed known IDed and that's just louisiana
i think a like number has been officially IDed in mississippi

it won't be pretty, there are 50 officially dead just from waveland, a tiny town, so don't hope for too much

it will take time to get all the bodies & ID everyone but it will be many thousands
