By looking at groups such as Fatah, the IRA, and the KKK, you can see that an Extremist Group has several several different stages in the existence of that group. No one stage is the most deadly, and each stage may happen at different lengths.
Birth - An Event brings a terrorist group to life. During this time, the group is quite obscure and can do evil deeds and the members of the group may not face prosecution.
Life - This is the time when the Group is at it's largest. The People and the Government have full knowledge of the group. One of two things will happen. The Group will either face constant resistance from the people it harasses and be banned by the Government (Go to Death Phase) OR this group's actions will be condoned by a group of people and the government will be indifferent to what the group does (This will allow the Life Phase to continue for several decades).
Death - The Group's Death may happen for several reasons. 1. The Group becomes unpopular with the people that would support it 2. The Government acts against the Group 3. New blood comes into the Group and sees that the Extremist Group is too 'moderate'
If the Group 'dies': 1. It could be 'revived' 2. The new blood that I mentioned earlier could form a split off group 3. The group just fades into history
Sometimes a group does not completely die, but just hovers between Life and Death. Such is the case with the modern KKK.
Why is this important to us?
I consider the 'Conservative' Movement, the 'christian' Right, and those elements that control the GOP to be Extremist. I think we can save America and the world if we were to push the Far Right into the Death Phase.
