Reporters gone wild--did you see Bush lie on camera about that black guy?
So I'm watching Salon's "Reporters gone wild", a 10 minute (roughly) film made of various Katrina related snippets (Ted Koppel w/Brownie, Anderson w/Landrieu, etc.).

Right in the middle, about 5:25, there's a bit called "Tell Us About Your Conversation"--with Bush and a Salvation Army volunteer.

The reporter goes "Tell us about your conversation." Bush replies something like "He's a volunteer from Shreveport, Louisiana." I think the volunteer goes "Actually, I'm not from Louisiana at all." Bush, walking away at this point, goes "He says he's glad to help." Really cavalierly, like okay, I did the photo op, shut up, watch this drive.

WHY is Bush seen as caring or whatever, when *every* time I've seen him unscripted he's been either stupid as hell (like when he said New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania will get the funds they need, post 9-11) or cold and curt?

Here's the link--am I right in my description of what's said in that exchange?:

1. Didn't he say "Whoa, double whammy!"
Or something like that to a Gold Star Mom he met in regard to losing her son?

3. her husband
lost in the trade center, he was a fireman. Bush met her the day before her wedding anniversary-hence the "double whammy". Mrs Fontana ( I think) said it was the stupidest thing anyone had said to her.
