Why did the Mayor of NO move to TEXAS? Why not LA ????

I can't understand why he would move to a new state.

I hate to think it but is his head sticking out of the Chimp's back pocket?

I haven't heard this. Is he just staying in TX for now since most of his evacuated citizens are there or is he really moving?

I don't have a link, but I read this on DU yesterday. Maybe someone else has the link.

Sorry, you're right. Here's a link:

http://www.nola.com/newslogs/tporleans/index.ssf?/mtlogs/nola_tporleans/archives/2005_09.html

and the text:

In a stark reminder of how drastically Hurricane Katrina has affected the lives of New Orleanians, Mayor Ray Nagin has purchased a home in Dallas and enrolled his young daughter in school there.

Nagin, who spoke with The Times-Picayune by telephone from Dallas, where he has been since Wednesday, said he plans to return to New Orleans on Saturday. He said he will remain in the Crescent City while his family lives for the next six months in Dallas, making occasional visits to his family when possible.

It's not clear where Nagin will be living: His home on Bayou St. John suffered massive flooding, the mayor said, although he has not inspected it.

5. His family is staying in Dallas.
He will still be in LA primarily, but his wife and kids are in TX. The kids will attend school in Dallas.

7. Maybe because Houston is a major city with a sea port and the
same banking and oil interest as much of the businesses of NO and maybe because no other cities in LA are of any SIZE to take that amount of people, especially cities that have not been effected byt Katrina. There are no other large housing areas that I can think of in LA that have not been hit by the storm.

The wife and kids are only supposed to be there for 6 months. Nagin will spend most of every week in LA.

11. This is where the conspiracy nut in me comes out
It is reported that he bought a house in Dallas and is SPUN that he is deserting his city. . .when actually he is setting up a home for his wife and children while he continues to work in NO to recover. Next he is ass-kissing Bush and blaming the Governor for the mess in NO.

Here is what I think: He experienced first hand the ROVENATOR from the spin his house purchase was made into by the media (fed by Rove) and he decided if he wanted any kind of career left he would play with the Bushies.

So the NO mayor is on board, the federal government is on board and the Governor of LA gets the shaft. Conclusion? Republican Governor in LA who will screw the Mayor of NO at a later date. . .

15. Nagin is a DINO
he only ran as a democrat be cause he knew a Mepub couldn't win. Watch him change his political affiliation once all the poor people who vote Democratic are dispersed from the city permanently.

16. Sad to say you may be right , I pray he

does not give up on his city and its people.

My friend, who lived in NO for many years, grew up there, is MAD at Nagin!

I tried to tell him that Nagin was a good guy trying to make the best out of a bad situation.

He said he had talked to his NO's family/friends and they are MAD at Nagin! Mad as hell at Nagin and Blanco! MAD!!!!!!

Maybe he isn't trustworthy but there is a plausible excuse for doing that.

If the mayor can't afford a house in his own state there is no hope for anyone else.

for 80,000 is now selling for a 1/4 of a million. I don't think mayor makes that much money. But you're right, there is no hope for the poor to return to NO.

23. if you saw Nagin on Meet the Press or on CNN
you know that he is in Dallas only for a week, settling in his family. He will then come back to New Orleans and try (but, they won't let him, hide and watch) head up the rebuilding effort. Make no mistake about it, New Orleans would be better off with Nagin heading up the rebuilding effort than Vitter and his repuke group.

27. He can lead better if he's not worried about his family.
Quite a few folks from Louisiana have bought houses in Texas recently--the ones who can afford it. Prices in intact parts of Louisiana have gone through the roof.

I was wondering what the complete story was.

Of course I want his children to go to school.

Just wondering why a LA person that was mayor would want to leave his state.

35. As many people have stated on this thread.....
he moved his family up here (as did 1000's of other New Orleanians) so his kids have a school to go to and a roof over their head. He is going to be in NOLA almost all the time. The reason he chose Dallas is because others in his family evacuated here and he has a very good friend that lives here and can help take care of his family. I met the good friend (and Nagin) the other day when they both walked into my barbershop while I was there.

36. Your details make me feel a lot better

Last night I saw him "sticking up for Bush" and blaming Blanco.

I really like Nagin a lot and was shocked to see him blasting Blanco and not Bush.

So, as an African American, I want to see the Brother succeed --- as a Democrat and for his people and the world.

Thanks for the info.

29. He will be travelling between Dallas (where his kids are going to ..
school) and NOLA over the next few months.

It really disgusts me how easily some posters can turn on someone. Especially in this case, when we should all be rallying around a truly down-to-earth person who is trying to balance out his job and what is best for his kids.
