FEMA reaches out to corporate america for help
I work for a large insurance company and just got this email:

Yesterday I met with the Community Action team and they indicated they have received numerous requests asking about how we can help those impacted by Hurricane Katrina. While we've been working on a couple of things, one item came up late yesterday. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approached us for help in processing claim notices. They simply don't have the staff to pull this off and are reaching out to corporate America for assistance, and especially those companies with call centers.

Details at this point are still a little vague and we are also evaluating if we can get out technology linked up to make this happen. While we do that, I wanted to get indications of interests for participation. I should note that this is not a volunteer situation as you would be paid for your time. So here's what I'd like to know:

And then it goes on to tell us how to 'volunteer'.

I loved the line 'they simply don't have the staff' they just realized this last night!!!

3. how do you think
they are going to pay us 'volunteers'
I bet there is some kind of tax break.

Many of us make more than $15 an hour. They are planning this for this weekend...but question...how are the evacuees gonna call us???

4. They are
probably paying the "volunteers" via a no-bid contract.

Of course, they could have just hired people in India...

To some extent I agree with FEMA outsourcing this -- there is no reason for them to maintain 100's of people 24/7 for the 2 months a year they might need it. However, it should of done as part of their planning and preparation and they should already have contracts in place with technology deployed, etc.

Oh yea... FEMA & Preparedness planning... :banghead:
