What do you think of Sen. Tom Coburn's proposal?
He's a R Senator from OK saying on MSNBC now that we ought to cut pork in the spending bills and use it for Katrina relief. Saying we should put a comptroller in charge for oversight. Sounds good to me.

Of course, now he's reiterating the line about not blaming anyone for the response to Katrina (when asked about Brown.) :eyes:

No link, I'll look now to see if I can find more re: his proposal.

1. Colburn is that new Repug from Oklahoma who ran a Rovian type
campaign. I would not trust him as far as I can see him.

8. He's not exactly new
He was a representative from Oklahoma that was part of the republican sweep of 1994, but he actually took the promise of term limits seriously and retired after 3 terms in 2000. He then returned to his medical practice (which I'm sure relies on a lot of faith-based ways of thinking) then did the Rovian thing to get into the Senate.

Oklahoma had a nice break from him for 4 years.

2. I don't think much of it
What I call pork, someone else calls a new library for their town.

True, there's a lot of wasteful stuff, a la bridge to nowhere in Alaska. But I'd much rather cut the Pentagon's budget in half, which would be very doable, provided we weren't trying to kick the entire world's ass.

And I can't end this post without mentioning that Coburn is a worthless piece of garbage.

6. That bridge was exactly what I was thinking of.
I don't know anything about this guy, what else has he done?

11. He's a freshman Senator, and he's among the most conservative
of conservatives.

He was the guy worried about "rampant lesbianism" in the high school girls' bathrooms in Oklahoma. He's very concerned about what's happening in your bedroom too.

3. Does "oversight"
mean to "oversee" or "overlook"?

4. They'll cut spending in Dem areas, and say it offsets their tax cuts.
With what Katrina will cost, the GOP will have to make some show of cutting government spending before they again try to explain why billionaires need tax cuts.

5. Asking For Cobourn's opinion on helping people
is like george w. booosh really caring about people. The two just don't jive.

This fundie wingnut will do this country a tremendous favor right now to STFU.

As the criticism grown, the water carriers are doing all they can to save their failing manchild. Yet another foolish attempt. Sadly, the voter in Oklahoma will re-elect this slimebag for years to come.

7. Not sure about that
He is scum, but in the SurveyUSA poll, when asked the voters of the state of Oklahoma rated him the lowest ( along with Inhofe ) of all the senators. IOW, all other states rated their senators higher than Oklahomans rated those two.

Whether he wins or not depends on who runs against him. If Oklahoma Dems can get their act together. Inhofe could have been beaten last time, but NO, we have to run a flawed and weakened candidate.

9. Good Luck
Even a DINO couldn't beat Colburn last year.

I'd love to see a new Boren and a rebirth of the Democratic Party in that state, but right now it's the home of some of the wackiest of the kool-aid drinkers.

There are a bunch of us here on DU and across the net that are hoping a new generations of Democrats with spines will now step forward. My checkbook is at the ready for any Democrat that holds this regime and its enablers like Coburn and Imhoffe (:puke:) accountable.

Cheers...

10. Right on point
How did Brad Carson lose to a doctor that performed stealth sterilizations? Think it was Harry Truman that remarked that when given a choice between a Dem that was wooing the Repub voter and a Repug, they would choose a Repug every time. It's ok to have conservative opinions, but you'll never out get the hard core to switch, you have to give the majority in the middle a clearly better choice.
