Stossel: Price gouging ensures that scarce resources go only "to those who really need it"

In his September 7 syndicated column, ABC News 20/20 co-anchor John Stossel defended price gougers, writing that by charging $20 for a bottle of water to a person whose baby needed it to live, "the price gouger makes sure his water goes to those who really need it." Stossel added: "It was the price gouger's 'exploitation' that saved your child." He justified this claim because price gougers -- people and companies that charge exorbitant prices for scarce and necessary resources (such as water or oil) -- "save lives" because they dependably provide those necessary goods or services to those who need them, motivated by their own self-interest to make money.

Great so the mother with child who can't afford water for her child basically wasn't deserving enough of that water and should just die of dehydration.

You're a stupidass embecilie with your dumbass logical reason Stossel. Go choke on your cheesy ass mustache!

1. I thought this smarmy git prided himself on his powers of logic
I don't see any logic there at all.

Just plain stupid and insensitive, actually. What, does he have stock in a bottled-water company?

4. I hope John Stossel loses all his money someday.
If he asked me for help, I'd tell him to live by his words and stop begging. I'd probably throw in a "Go fuck yourself," too.

6. This is how Stossel makes his living...........
saying stupid shit like this, then sitting back and watching everyone go apeshit over the crap he says. If people just ignored this POS he'd be out of a job, but we're all so outraged at his callousness we can't help but comment. We're falling right into his trap and THIS is what keeps him in business.

Ignore the fuck. Everyone knows he's one step above plant life, so just ignore him.

9. He's mangling the argument. I know it better than he does...
It's not a matter of "need", it's a matter of ensuring that not only water but other resources go to the same rich individuals so that if there's a question of survival, at least the rich person will survive relatively intact, rather than rich and poor getting a mishmash of resources and more of both randomly dying or catch some crippling disease or well, stuff like that. Sure, Ayn Randers make "deserving" a sort of shorthand for it but, we're talking economic natural selection here.

It makes sense as a way society weeds out the disadvantaged in a catastrophic situation where government has completely collapsed. This in no way excuses government completely collapsing, see. So the argument, while sound on economic principles, is largely irrelevant because of the assumption that it makes: that we should regard the complete collapse of human government as acceptable because the society that remains will lead to the partial survival of American citizens, tilted towards the wealthy.

This scenario was pretty much the one that made me reject economic conservatism years ago after having learned how it ticks.

10. I guess that means only people who have $20 for a bottle of water...
really need it. The rest of the people who can't afford it don't really need water. That is also the bush administration's philosophy. What a country this has become.

right on the ocean because he knew when the water took it down, taxpayers would foot the bill for a new one. He was right. The first time only the first floor was ruined and FEMA paid. The second time the whole place went and FEMA paid again. Stossel found this amusing.

(Edit to explain that I click back and forth during commercials and sometimes check out Fox. It would be embarassing to have anyone think I watch it for any length of time!)
