72. I think the original rumor was that the alligator was eating
the dead in NO. Maybe that's what the poster means by "debunked." That the blood is from it being shot, not necessarily from eating people.

61. Sadly, this is probably true.
However, as much as I care about my dog, I would rather see her and die quickly than to see her live in these conditions. Sometimes, death is more humane than life.

7. Folks.....I love animals....but....
imagine what it must be like. Remember what it is like to chase a dog that doesn't want to be caught. There aren't enough relief workers to remove victims and chase former pets too. Sadly, this is common in events such as this. Before long the dogs will be forming packs and becoming wild and feral.

Also, think about nighttime and diseases.

I'm a lifelong New Englander, and had never been to the South before.

Aside from all the obvious differences between the two regions, there was another difference that I could not quite put my finger on until much later. But, as it eventually seemed to me, this is it: New England is the definition of stolid, and there's always a certain normality, even when things are at their worst. While in the South, there's always somehow a faint scent of disaster in the air, even during ostensibly normal times.

I think our politicians need to see their handiwork.

The press during the 40's 50's and 60's put photos of dead people in the paper all the time. Look at Cable TV & Movies, what makes them think reality should be censored? These photo's are who we are. We made this monster (Iraq & N.O.) and the public should be forced to look at themselves in the mirror.

67. I thought someone had posted these photos on a website...
...and linked to DU with a thread title of something like "Photos the government doesn't want you to see" but about halfway down (after a few posts), the OP posted a message of something like "...SOMEONE (WITH THE INITIALS F.E.M.A.) SHUT DOWN THE WEBSITE" or something to that effect. Anyway, the site was then inaccessible. I wondered it the photos had been posted elsewhere and if the one in the OP here was one of those.

Sorry, that's all I can remember...

It is my understanding that they can ask a photographer to leave a scene if the photographer may be in the way or at risk, but they can't confiscate a photographer's tool of the trade, their engine of freedom of expression.

54. Whatever happened to "respect for life"?
This was someone's loved one. Those who don't know where their loved ones are might look at this picture and think, "Maybe that's my brother, being eaten by dogs." New Orleanians will never recover, emotionally, from pictures like this. Abandoned by their country. Abandoned by their government.

Dead people left all over the place to be eaten by dogs. In the United States of America. With an alleged "culture of life."

They care more about fetuses than they do about people.

Goddamn this administration to hell. Goddamn their dark souls to hell.

There are too many people, Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, etc. who have done done an end run around the federal government to help people. The gulf has not been abandoned by the people. Our government has cast us to the wind. It's a fucking shame. We were meant for so much more.

62. My 14 year old daughter asked if we could move to Canada
I agree, this country is ruined, and I don't know if we can take it back. I greive for the children. I am ashamed of our government. I fear what lies ahead. That photo could be my son or husband being nothing more than dog meat.

FUCK YOU BUSH AND CO. This country is in for more evil than it has ever known.

and contracted to build a house. Hoping for it to be complete by Christmas 2006. Unfortunately, our 15 yo son won't graduate high school until 2008.

We had hoped to not retire before he finished high school.
Now, who knows?

63. I've had images like this in my mind for days...
and unfortunately they're now appearing in my dreams. Call them nightmares. I haven't had nightmares since 9/11, and I have to say even those horrors weren't as bad as these!

I don't think Americans -- a great many of us, at least -- will need to see photos like this in order to imagine just what those roving packs of poisoned, starving dogs are doing as they try to survive. It really is Nature -- thrown back several big stages in what was previously a relatively "civilized" domain.

I DO think it's a good idea to get such photos as this "out there," however. Just in case....

I visited New Orleans once, when I got to go along with my fiance and his parents on their last "family" vacation, our (high school) senior year. We got lost several times and I'm sure the parts of the city we saw that way were NOT the ones we tourists were intended to see. I was reminded of those scenes years later when my parents and I, along with three other couples from the "snowbirds'" trailer park in Alamo, TX (in the Rio Grande Valley) went across the border for some shopping in Mexico. The van driver got a little off the beaten tourist track then, too, and I saw poverty as I'd never seen it before -- except something close in New Orleans in 1967 on that vacation "tour."

But my point is, Nature is savage, but perhaps no more savage than what we sometimes like to think of as "civilization." AND I do believe images like the one in the OP here will be inevitably coming to people's minds -- not only in America but around the world -- as the true extent of the "natural disaster" called Katrina sinks in. Everyone already knows how badly the rescue and relief effort by the federal government was handled. No amount of BushCo's repeating "what went right" is going to wipe away the impression the rest of the country and the rest of the world has of America now. Appointing Karen Hughes as a PR chief to try to change minds isn't going to do it either.

Nor is clapping "Brownie" on the back and congratulating him on the "good job" he's doing. Who's THAT gonna fool?? Only an imperial "president" could even dream it would! A "dear leader" whose disconnect from "his" people is pretty much complete.

I think it is ONLY scenes such as these, whether viewed as photos or just imagined as people THINK about what's REALLY going on in the Gulf Coast now, that will bring home to everyone just how WRONG this particular Bush presidency has been all along. It's all just SO HUGE, the disaster, and the catastrophe AFTER the hurricane disaster called Katrina. It ain't goin' away ... and BushCo ain't gonna convince many that it's been anything other than what it is.

What's that saying I hear a lot these days?

"IT IS WHAT IT IS."

~VV

81. Ok this may be a silly question
has there always been this long a delay in retreiving the dead? Is it a matter of not enough rescue/relief people to retrieve the dead? I understand the importance of concentrating on search and rescue of the living, but I can't recall in any other disaster just leaving the dead souls to lie there and decompose. All of the reporters keep mentioning the bodies just lying there. It just seems so utterly atrocious.

106. that is what the GRAPHIC warning is for
I appreciate your sympathy for this poor soul, but you came in this thread on your own volition.

The least you could do is act mature when expressing your dismay. This is not propaganda...this is the reality of New Orleans. I seriously do not understand why Ameicans feel they have the right to be sheltered from death and the dead.

It SHOULD revile you, it SHOULD make you angry, but not want to "kick" the messenger's ass. If you don't want your world shattered, avoid the thread.

It does not dignify the dead to hide them after an incredible disaster like this in an effort to protect the government that killed them. It was the government that made this issue political by killing these people.
