I am all for the march of science, but one thing the reduction of the wrath of the gods to a weather system has helped result in is a lack of respect and fear of nature. You will find people respecting nature fairly often, but precious few truly fear it, in the "This planet is going to fuck us up if we don't stop fucking up" way, not the "I hate bugs and no air conditioning!" way. Most of those who do are those who have survived a natural disaster--volcano, forest fire, flood...
Yes, we're damaging the world, but that doesn't matter. The planet will be here long after we will...and in any case, nothing lasts forever. "Save the planet"? No.
But "Save us from the planet's wrath"? That I can get behind.
Don't get me wrong. I don't think nature is actually sentient or possesses a collective intelligence in any way that can be tracked...but the nature of the beast is to bite back when it's bitten. The more the planet's system is disrupted, the more chaotic and destructive its dark side becomes. In a nutshell, global warming will result in more powerful natural phenomena, including hurricanes.
