INCREDIBLE First Person Katrina Account
(My wife just got this from a friend, it was written by the friend's co-workers who were in New Orleans for a Conference. I am 100% convinced it is credible. I have removed the names for obvious reasons. Unbelievable. -i.)

Hurricane Katrina-Our Experiences

Two days after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, the Walgreen’s store at the corner of Royal and Iberville streets remained locked. The dairy display case was clearly visible through the widows. It was now 48 hours without electricity, running water, plumbing. The milk, yogurt, and cheeses were beginning to spoil in the 90-degree heat. The owners and managers had locked up the food, water, pampers, and prescriptions and fled the City. Outside Walgreen’s windows, residents and tourists grew increasingly thirsty and hungry.

The much-promised federal, state and local aid never materialized and the windows at Walgreen’s gave way to the looters. There was an alternative. The cops could have broken one small window and distributed the nuts, fruit juices, and bottle water in an organized and systematic manner. But they did not. Instead they spent hours playing cat and mouse, temporarily chasing away the looters.

We were finally airlifted out of New Orleans two days ago and arrived home yesterday (Saturday). We have yet to see any of the TV coverage of look at a newspaper. We are willing to guess that there were no video images or front-page pictures of European or affluent white tourists looting the Walgreen’s in the French Quarter.

We also suspect the media will have been inundated with “hero” images of the National Guard, the troops and the police struggling to help the “victims” of the Hurricane. What you will not see, but what we witnessed were the real heroes and sheroes of the hurricane relief effort: the working class of New Orleans. The maintenance workers who used a fork lift to carry the sick and disabled. The engineers, who rigged, nurtured and kept the generators running. The electricians who improvised thick extension cords stretching over blocks to share the little electricity we had in order to free cars stuck on rooftop parking lots. Nurses who took over for mechanical ventilators and spent many hours on end manually forcing air into the lungs of unconscious patients to keep them alive. Doormen who rescued folks stuck in elevators. Refinery workers who broke into boat yards, “stealing” boats to rescue their neighbors clinging to their roofs in flood waters. Mechanics who helped hot-wire any car that could be found to ferry people out of the City. And the food service workers who scoured the commercial kitchens improvising communal meals for hundreds of those stranded.

Most of these workers had lost their homes, and had not heard from members of their families, yet they stayed and provided the only infrastructure for the 20% of New Orleans that was not under water.

On Day 2, there were approximately 500 of us left in the hotels in the French Quarter. We were a mix of foreign tourists, conference attendees like ourselves, and locals who had checked into hotels for safety and shelter from Katrina. Some of us had cell phone contact with family and friends outside of New Orleans. We were repeatedly told that all sorts of resources including the National Guard and scores of buses were pouring in to the City. The buses and the other resources must have been invisible because none of us had seen them.

We decided we had to save ourselves. So we poured our money and came up with $25,000 to have ten buses come and take us out of the City. Those who did not have the requisite $45.00 for a ticket were subsidized by those who did have extra money. We waited for 48 hours for the buses, spending the last 12 hours standing outside, sharing the limited water, food, and clothes we had. We created a priority boarding area for the sick, elderly and new born babies. We waited late into the night for the “imminent” arrival of the buses. The buses never arrived. We later learned that the minute the arrived to the City limits, they were commandeered by the military.

By day 4 our hotels had run out of fuel and water. Sanitation was dangerously abysmal. As the desperation and despair increased, street crime as well as water levels began to rise. The hotels turned us out and locked their doors, telling us that the “officials” told us to report to the convention center to wait for more buses. As we entered the center of the City, we finally encountered the National Guard.

The Guards told us we would not be allowed into the Superdome as the City’s primary shelter had been descended into a humanitarian and health hellhole. The guards further told us that the City’s only other shelter, the Convention Center, was also descending into chaos and squalor and that the police were not allowing anyone else in. Quite naturally, we asked, “If we can’t go to the only 2 shelters in the City, what was our alternative?” The guards told us that that was our problem, and no they did not have extra water to give to us. This would be the start of our numerous encounters with callous and hostile “law enforcement”.

We walked to the police command center at Harrah’s on Canal Street and were told the same thing, that we were on our own, and no they did not have water to give us. We now numbered several hundred. We held a mass meeting to decide a course of action. We agreed to camp outside the police command post. We would be plainly visible to the media and would constitute a highly visible embarrassment to the City officials. The police told us that we could not stay. Regardless, we began to settle in and set up camp. In short order, the police commander came across the street to address our group. He told us he had a solution: we should walk to the Pontchartrain Expressway and cross the greater New Orleans Bridge where the police had buses lined up to take us out of the City. The crowed cheered and began to move. We called everyone back and explained to the commander that there had been lots of misinformation and wrong information and was he sure that there were buses waiting for us. The commander turned to the crowd and stated emphatically, “I swear to you that the buses are there.”

We organized ourselves and the 200 of us set off for the bridge with great excitement and hope. As we marched pasted the convention center, many locals saw our determined and optimistic group and asked where we were headed. We told them about the great news. Families immediately grabbed their few belongings and quickly our numbers doubled and then doubled again. Babies in strollers now joined us, people using crutches, elderly clasping walkers and others people in wheelchairs. We marched the 2-3 miles to the freeway and up the steep incline to the Bridge. It now began to pour down rain, but it did not dampen our enthusiasm.

As we approached the bridge, armed Gretna sheriffs formed a line across the foot of the bridge. Before we were close enough to speak, they began firing their weapons over our heads. This sent the crowd fleeing in various directions. As the crowd scattered and dissipated, a few of us inched forward and managed to engage some of the sheriffs in conversation. We told them of our conversation with the police commander and of the commander’s assurances. The sheriffs informed us there were no buses waiting. The commander had lied to us to get us to move.

We questioned why we couldn’t cross the bridge anyway, especially as there was little traffic on the 6-lane highway. They responded that the West Bank was not going to become New Orleans and there would be no Superdomes in their City. These were code words for if you are poor and black, you are not crossing the Mississippi River and you were not getting out of New Orleans.

Our small group retreated back down Highway 90 to seek shelter from the rain under an overpass. We debated our options and in the end decided to build an encampment in the middle of the Ponchartrain Expressway on the center divide, between the O’Keefe and Tchoupitoulas exits. We reasoned we would be visible to everyone, we would have some security being on an elevated freeway and we could wait and watch for the arrival of the yet to be seen buses.

All day long, we saw other families, individuals and groups make the same trip up the incline in an attempt to cross the bridge, only to be turned away. Some chased away with gunfire, others simply told no, others to be verbally berated and humiliated. Thousands of New Orleaners were prevented and prohibited from self-evacuating the City on foot. Meanwhile, only two City shelters sank further into squalor and disrepair. The only way across the bridge was by vehicle. We saw workers stealing trucks, buses, moving vans, semi-trucks and any car that could be hotwired. All were packed with people trying to escape the misery New Orleans had become.

Our little encampment began to blossom. Someone stole a water delivery trick and brought it up to us. Let’s hear it for looting! A mile or so down the freeway, an army truck lost a couple of pallets of C-rations on a tight turn. We ferried the food back to our camp in shopping carts. Now secure with the two necessities, food and water, cooperation, community and creativity flowered. We organized a clean up, and hung garbage bags from the rebar poles. We made beds from wood pallets and cardboard. We designated a storm drain as the bathroom and the kids built an elaborate enclosure for privacy out of plastic, broken umbrellas, and other scraps. We even organized a food recycling system where individuals could swap out parts of C-rations (applesauce for babies and candies for kids!).

This was a process we saw repeatedly in the aftermath of Katrina. When individuals had to fight to find food or water, it meant looking out for yourself only. You had to do whatever it took to find water for your kids or food for your parents. When these basic needs were met, people began to look out for each other, working together and constructing a community.

If the relief organizations had saturated the City with food and water in the first 2 or 3 days, the desperation, the frustration and the ugliness would not have set in.

Flush with the necessities, we offered food and water to passing families and individuals. Many decided to stay and join us. Our encampment grew to 80 or 90 people.

From a woman with a battery powered radio we learned that the media was talking about us. Up in full view on the freeway, every relief and news organizations saw us on their way into the City. Officials were being asked what they were going to do about all those families living up on the freeway? The officials responded they were going to take care of us. Some of us got a sinking feeling. “Taking care of us” had an ominous tone to it.

Unfortunately, our sinking feeling (along with the sinking City) was correct. Just as dusk set in, a Gretna Sheriff showed up, jumped out of his patrol vehicle, aimed his gun at our faces, screaming, “Get off the fucking freeway”. A helicopter arrived and used the wind from its blades to blow away our flimsy structures. As we retreated, the sheriff loaded up his truck with our food and water.

Once again, at gunpoint, we were forced off the freeway. All the law enforcement agencies appeared threatened when we congregated or congealed into groups of 20 or more. In every congregation of “victims” they saw “mob” or “riot”. We felt safety in numbers. Our “we must stay together” was impossible because the agencies would force us into small atomized groups.

In the pandemonium of having our camp raided and destroyed, we scattered once again. Reduced to a small group of 8 people, in the dark, we sought refuge in an abandoned school bus, under the freeway on Cilo Street. We were hiding from possible criminal elements but equally and definitely, we were hiding from the police and sheriffs with their martial law, curfew and shoot-to-kill policies.

The next days, our group of 8 walked most of the day, made contact with New Orleans Fire Department and were eventually airlifted out by an urban search and rescue team. We were dropped off near the airport and managed to catch a ride with the National Guard. The two young guardsmen apologized for the limited response of the Louisiana guards. They explained that a large section of their unit was in Iraq and that meant they were shorthanded and were unable to complete all the tasks they were assigned.

We arrived at the airport on the day a massive airlift had begun. The airport had become another Superdome. We 8 were caught in a press of humanity as flights were delayed for several hours while George Bush landed briefly at the airport for a photo op. After being evacuated on a coast guard cargo plane, we arrived in San Antonio, Texas.

There the humiliation and dehumanization of the official relief effort continued. We were placed on buses and driven to a large field where we were forced to sit for hours and hours. Some of the buses did not have air-conditioners. In the dark, hundreds if us were forced to share two filthy overflowing porta-potties. Those who managed to make it out with any possessions (often a few belongings in tattered plastic bags) we were subjected to two different dog-sniffing searches.

Most of us had not eaten all day because our C-rations had been confiscated at the airport because the rations set off the metal detectors. Yet, no food had been provided to the men, women, children, elderly, disabled as they sat for hours waiting to be “medically screened” to make sure we were not carrying any communicable diseases.

This official treatment was in sharp contrast to the warm, heart-felt reception given to us by the ordinary Texans. We saw one airline worker give her shoes to someone who was barefoot. Strangers on the street offered us money and toiletries with words of welcome.

Throughout, the official relief effort was callous, inept, and racist. There was more suffering than need be. Lives were lost that did not need to be lost.

2. Wo. This needs to get out to a wider audience
The question being, of course, whether America's famously brief attention span will soon doom it to news oblivion.

There are also going to be made for TV movies HBO specials and MANY book deals in the making.

This is only the very tip of the iceberg.

equally sorry that the "relief effort" was horrid. I live in Texas and I thought, intuitively, that the people left in NO were victims of the man-made disaster of a response that followed the hurricane. You validate that for me in these three sentences.

"If the relief organizations had saturated the City with food and water in the first 2 or 3 days, the desperation, the frustration and the ugliness would not have set in."

"They explained that a large section of their unit was in Iraq and that meant they were shorthanded and were unable to complete all the tasks they were assigned."

"Throughout, the official relief effort was callous, inept, and racist. There was more suffering than need be. Lives were lost that did not need to be lost."

It is pathetic and outrageous that our Government was not there immediately after the storm passed to take care of Americans. Actually, it's pathetic that they allowed this to happen to New Orleans. Bush is a disgrace now, more than ever.

After posting, I see that this is an account from someone else. I answered as if speaking to the person, maybe your wife can share my comments?

13. Wow. I heard another report of people raising $25,000 for buses....
A few days ago I saw on CNN some white tourists describing how they had tried to get buses for $25,000. When the buses didn't show up, they found themselves stranded on their own in the city and were terrified. A young black man came to their rescue and got them to some kind of safety. I wonder if these stories are connected.

to me, and I'd suspect we'll see similar accounts from others involved.

I just can't believe that the victims of a tragedy would be treated this way, like criminals. It's like "Escape From New York".

54. When you have the authorities concerned with law and order
above compassion, they are going to see "looter, thief" in every powerless person they meet. The Iraq National Guard troops were trained in , I can't remember the ominous wording exactly, the use of lethal force, and that was widely disseminated. Remember the old saying when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail? When you're trained to act against terrorists, everyone looks like a terrorist, even your own countrymen!!! The National Guard should be trained for rescue, not fighting against terrorists.

33. This story is true, I heard a man in Phoenix today at the Coliseum...
where many of the survivors have been relocated, tell almost the exact same story. He too was with them on the freeway, he had been at the Super Dome as well, left there and went to the freeway, he was later air lifted to the Air Port where he said they waited another 17hr. He said he saw people dying all around him, committing suicide, people raping children, and one MP he said shot to death. He said he could tell much more that was even worse than that but he just didn't want to, then he put his head down and just gazed at the ground for the longest time. I was amazed and humbled.
Today myself. my husband my daughter and my grandson went to see if we could volunteer at the Coliseum, we were turned away as were almost everyone. They had NG stationed at the entrance and were allowing the survivors to come in and out, they had ID badges on them. I can see the reason for not allowing just anyone in, but as I showed them I am a Crisis worker with CPR, CPI and First Aid training. We went there to work, to do any thing that was needed of us but were turned away. What we did end up doing however was joining a group that had set up a makeshift donation center. We helped put up canopies for shade and someone had brought a huge BBQ and all the fixings for a welcome to the survivors with food and drink. They had made signs welcoming them to "New Orleans Arizona".
While we were there I was blessed to hear this man speak of his ordeal. All I could say is "I'm glad you are alive"
Some others came to the "party" and came up to us and hugged us, they did not know us but they hugged us anyway.
My heart is broken for these people.
This was a great experience for me today, the temp was probably 110 out today and I didn't think I was going to make it in that heat today, they did for almost 6 days without the needed water or food in excruciating heat.
What a miracle any of them survived this.

It should be widely read. People need to know what life is like when you have no important contacts in an American disaster scene.

42. The Pentagon was in charge at this point
and this is what happens when you run a national disaster like a military operation rather then a rescue mission. Rummie thought New Orleans was Baghdad and he ran it even worse.

Friday Gen Honore finally arrived on the scene and took charge. The National Guard was put back in charge, like they should have been from the beginning and the response turned from night to day.

Rummie forget that these people were all Americans and he treated them like dogs instead. Imagine what life in Iraq has been like for the last 2 years? We only got a small taste.

46. A friend and I were talking
We wondered why people at the convention center weren't organizing as the people in this story tried to do. (Not *blaming* them, just noting that it is human nature to organize... to *do* something)Many people CNN spoke to said they were former military and so had some idea of how to manage 'in the field' and improvising(not to mention many others capable of rising to lead in the crisis).... digging latrines - or at least something of the sort, creating specific areas for first aid, food distribution etc. We couldn't understand how people could be made to endure such squalor and neglect. Our conclusion was that they were not ALLOWED to help themselves or each other. It is heartbreaking. This story and others that have been posted seem to confirm what we thought. I can't believe that police or NG or whoever would actively stop or hinder these efforts. It is disgusting and I hope these stories are told far and wide.

47. Were these the people on the freeway that Shepherd Smith...
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 06:45 AM by TwoSparkles
...brought to America's attention?

Obviously, it was standard operation to disperse crowds--because they attracted attention to the enormity of the problem. Visible crowds spotlighted our governments' failings.

I wonder...if these heavy-handed tactics to disperse crowds were put in play because of Shepherd Smith's reporting, "We can't have reporters filming starving, dying crowds! Make sure you break up all groups of more than 10!" ...Can't you just hear it?

I hope to God this person speaks out to the media. I hope hundreds of survivors like this come forward. In addition, maybe some in the military will let their conscience be their guide, too. Maybe some of them will talk.

This is so despicable.

This has Bush's fingerprints all over it.

Maybe that's why people were told to go to the Super Dome and the Convention Center--and why they were kept there in such squalor for so long--because higher-ups wanted the suffering to be invisible.

Besides putting together survival kits for our family (one in each car, one in the house), I will be sure to pack a journal and some pens. Documenting evil is the only way to defeat it.

God bless this person for writing her story. If she wants to go to the media, I suggest offering the story as an exclusive (at first) to a major show--such as 60 Minutes, Good Morning America, etc. She can always talk to other outlets later, but if she offers her story as an exclusive to one show--she may have a better chance of in-depth coverage of her story. I was a media-relations exec in my former life--and offering exclusives increases the depth of coverage.

Keep us posted on this. Your friend is amazing and I'm so glad she is safe now.

51. Here's another one
http://www.leftturn.org/Articles/Viewer.aspx?id=670&type=W

In the refugee camp I just left, on the I-10 freeway near Causeway, thousands of people (at least 90% black and poor) stood and squatted in mud and trash behind metal barricades, under an unforgiving sun, with heavily armed soldiers standing guard over them. When a bus would come through, it would stop at a random spot, state police would open a gap in one of the barricades, and people would rush for the bus, with no information given about where the bus was going. Once inside (we were told) evacuees would be told where the bus was taking them - Baton Rouge, Houston, Arkansas, Dallas, or other locations. I was told that if you boarded a bus bound for Arkansas (for example), even people with family and a place to stay in Baton Rouge would not be allowed to get out of the bus as it passed through Baton Rouge.

You had no choice but to go to the shelter in Arkansas. If you had people willing to come to New Orleans to pick you up, they could not come within 17 miles of the camp.

there. I am sorry for everything everyone down there is going through. What I can say is that my brother is one of those down there searching for people, giving out food and water, etc. They are not arresting, beating, or doing anything to those who are stealing food and water. They know they would do the same for their families. He said they are instructed to get looters who are looting for jewelry, TVs, guns, things that are not a necessity. While, I know that a lot of the help is from those in the communities, the guard, and law enforcement agencies, etc, also need to be commended. My brother was sent down there before the hurricane hit to be prepared for the aftermath. He had to leave his wife and 2 small children to be down there not knowing what was going to happen. He saw trees being uprooted and thrown into cars. Roofs torn off of buildings. He felt scared for his life as did all of the others there. I am proud of ALL that have contributed to helping all of those who are in need right now. I am angry at how some things were handled obviously, but that will not get in the way of how proud I am of most of the others involved. On edit, I was also part of this storm, though it was only a cat. 1 when it reached me. I am proud of how my town has handled all of the evacuees and how they have graciously responded.

75. The reason for removing the names is
that I'm not going to send people's names out over the internet without their express permission. Sorry. There is approx. 2 degrees of separation between me and these folks. I have passed along messages urging them to contact the media along with requests from bloggers who want to get the story out; It seems to me that they DO want to get this out, and not anonymously, otherwise they wouldn't have written it- nevertheless, personally, I'm not going to put their names up there unless they give me the o.k. to do so.

As far as verifying the story, it sounds to me like several of the major elements have been independently corroborated. However, I promise- the second they tell me to go ahead and post their names I will do so. Peace.

73. New Orleans as the Future of America
The real horror of this account is that it is yet another demonstration of the extent to which the grotesque conditions in New Orleans were deliberately worsened by the authorities. It is yet another addition to the rapidly growing body of evidence this worsening was nothing less than an intentional, organized expression of Bush's policy -- evidence that becomes positively conclusive when it is examined from the perspective of class-struggle. What occurred in New Orleans was methodical genocide-by-neglect: the extermination of the poor, the extermination of a unique culture, and the extermination of one of the South's few Democratic Party strongholds as well.

To understand the present-day implications of class-struggle, you have to know something of the history of capitalism. The Russian Revolution of 1917 terrified capitalism into assuming a humanitarian guise; the New Deal in the United States and the welfare states of Europe were among the results. Meanwhile, even given the tyrannies of Stalinism, capitalism's terror of socialism remained overwhelming: the mere notion of workers demanding economic democracy was infinitely disturbing to the oligarchy; the possibility the formidable Red Army and the peerless Soviet intelligence apparatus might actually enforce that demand evoked bottomless horror in boardrooms around the world. But then the Soviet Union collapsed; the fear-factor that had restrained the oligarchy was lifted, and the capitalists were suddenly again free to run amok at their Tyrannosauric worst -- exactly as they had done before 1917. In Europe and elsewhere, this unleashed an ongoing campaign of relentless attacks on the welfare state. In America, the target was the New Deal, and the attack culminated in the presidency of George Bush -- a man carefully groomed by the global oligarchy to restore capitalism to all of its innate savagery -- maximum profits, maximum concentration of wealth and maximum oppression of all of us who have to work for a living. The one great and potentially liberating irony in all this is that by its savagery, the oligarchy has re-animated its one true enemy: Marxism is suddenly again not only as relevant as it was in 1917, but -- with the addition of American principles of constitutional governance -- it is now more relevant than ever.

Applying the objective analysis that becomes possible when we recognize the historical reality of class-struggle, we see clearly how everything Bush does serves the oligarchy's purpose. This is true in the Middle East (the imposition of theocracy in Iraq, and the reliable suppression of the people thereby); it is true in the U.S. (outsourcing, downsizing, reduction of wages, looting of pensions, destruction of the social safety net -- all this viciously worsened by skyrocketing prices); and it was never more vividly true than in New Orleans (slashing funds for levee improvement and disaster relief; withholding aid until the aftermath of Katrina inflicted a maximum death toll; blaming the victims for their own plight; denouncing the survival-struggles of the victims as "looting"; using "looting and unrest" as an excuse to further withhold aid; and thereby maliciously raising the death toll even higher). Viewed in this context, the atrocities committed in New Orleans are merely a logical expression of the class war Bush is waging against all of us -- a class war that in New Orleans has been raised to the next deadly level -- as if to numb us in preparation for much worse to come.

Why New Orleans? Demographics explain succinctly: the city is 67 percent black; it voted 77 percent for Kerry/Edwards and is one of the few Democratic strongholds in the entire South; 27 percent of its residents are officially impoverished -- making it one of the largest concentrations of urban poverty in the U.S. By the tactic of genocide-by-neglect, not only did Bush serve the Rove/Norquist/Republican purpose of destroying a Democratic stronghold (thereby altering forever the politics of the nation by guaranteeing Louisiana will become a wholly Republican, wholly Christofascist state). Bush also served the oligarchic purpose of ending poverty by death: remember that every dead Social Security recipient, every dead welfare recipient, every dead disabled person is a bonus for the oligarchy -- that much less money for social services, that much more money available for the concentration of wealth.

And then of course there is the object lesson the horror of New Orleans provides. All but the most dim-witted recognize that in Katrina and its aftermath we are seeing the true future of America. People dying in the streets while the powers that be manipulate relief efforts for maximum propaganda impact -- disaster as a Rove/Norquist/Goebbels photo-op. America of the New World Order: a tiny, arrogant and obscenely comfortable oligarchy ruling over the rest of us -- all of us increasingly desperate, increasingly frightened, increasingly oppressed, all of us kept in line by hard-eyed men riding armored cars and brandishing automatic rifles.

77. What else to say but that I agree, newswolf56
You know, I always loathed the Communists (still do, really) but I do see what you mean of how things have gotten and will get worse for the Third World Nation Imperial Amerika.

And how it coincided with the Fall of European Communism (which I still say was right to fall, it being the Left-mirror image of the hideous Bushevik Amerika).

I would also add this reasoning to your post: That the Fall of the Soviet Union allowed us to become like them, which we have in so many ways: information manipulation, executive agency total lies, and so many other things.

I guess we can be happy the Busheviks have yet to create the Gulags, although the Gitmo Archipelago certainly is a good start.

But yes, it is clear that without the threat of a Workers' evolt, it's back to 1890, then back to 1590 we go.

Even now, Nero and Caligula Bush are out there sharopening their teenaged teeth and murdering their nannies, preparing for the day when they will assume their Rightful Throne.

May God Help the poor bastards who have the misfortune to be alive when that happens.

89. Oh, but America does have a Gulag...
system. A higher percentage of our nation's population is in our prison system than any developed nation in the world. And perhaps more than all the nations in the world.

Drug laws prey on our underclass, disproportionately incarcerating minorities and the poor, while the more fortunate classes escape prosecution for the same crimes.

And those unfairly incarcerated are disenfranchised, stripped of citizenship, a perpetuation of Jim Crow America thriving to this day across our nation.

You draw parallels to the totalitarian excesses of Communism. But aren't the current actions of our leadership mimicking more closely the fascist tactics of the 1930's and 1940's? With concentration of wealth, corporate/party power structures, manipulation of the press through propaganda, manipulation of the political system and voting through corruption and party hegemony, reduction in civil rights, and the use of fear as a public political whip.

We are just awaiting our Kristal-night.

when the new Republikudnik mayor razes the black neighborhoods under eminent domain and for nonpayment of property taxes. The developers will soon move in with subsidized plans for reconstruction of upscale neighborhoods. The increased tax base will make NO a model for urban renewal. A now entrenched Republikudnik voting majority now guarantees that Louisiana goes red in the next Presidential election.

93. This is more than incompetence. Like the high munitions
repository in IRAQ that Rumsfeld allowed to be looted and may well be the explosives the insurgents are using for their IED's these thugs wanted to provoke an uprising. I draw this from two strange precognitions: Before the hurricane even struck Tweety was grilling the LA's Republican junior senator about the looting. And then the Army times refers to the looters as "insurgents". The Feds anticipated there would be mass confusion and hoped for the worst. Gov. Blanco read the play which is why she moved to protect her authority. You can thank your stars she's a Democrat.

96. This is PLANNED: Malevolent Neglect
Mr. Krugman:

You stated:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/02/opinion/02krugman.html

I don't think this is a simple tale of incompetence. The reason the military wasn't rushed in to help along the Gulf Coast is, I believe, the same reason nothing was done to stop looting after the fall of Baghdad. Flood control was neglected for the same reason our troops in Iraq didn't get adequate armor.

I think what we are mapping out here is what I am calling 'Malevolent Neglect.' It has certain 'constructs' (psychologists map out the 'interior', if you will, of a phenomenon.) See below.

---------- Forwarded Message ----------

There's a phenomenon going on here re: lack of federal assistance in N.O. and what took place prior to 9-11. I'm using the phrase (as psychologists are prone to assign something a descriptor as a kind of short-hand) "Malevolent Neglect."

We now have 2 BIG instances of Malevolent Neglect: 9-11 and New Orleans.

Both are associated with information voluminously parlayed to Bush's administration prior to the event. This is established.

Back up: get away from the smoke: what do you see: 2 events with massive warning, should've-been-planning, finger pointing during which nothing goes into the US Cabinet and little impact on the U.S. Congress.

I keep thinking back to Stanley Milgram's experiments; to Zimbardo's prison experiment. There are big archetypal forces being examined in all of these settings: sadism and torture.

There is a social psychology experiment being played out here---either consciously or unconsciously. I think some of both, more conscious than not, with the related parties, particularly Rove I think, working the pieces onto the board and then whistling as he walks away into the dark of the night, knowing that sometime/ somewhere the levee will break, the terrorists will take over the planes, the London Muslims scrambling in their back-packs because they all of a sudden figured out what was up.

94. I want those who suffered to file a massive class action suit against
the Bush Administration.

This story rings true and is consistent with bits and peices that are emerging from the survivors.

One way or another, those who abused our citizens must be removed from office!

95. ANOTHER long story: bellaciao.org: 9th Ward NOLA
Tuesday 6th September 2005 (06h24) :
New Orleans has been taken over by the United States Government The entire
city of New Orleans is under evacuation orders. I just spoke to my friend
Daniel in the Bywater (9th ward). He reports that unmarked police vehicles
(cadillacs) are driving through the neighborhood with SWAT team police armed
with 'big black machine guns' telling people through bullhorns they are
under orders to evacuate and must leave the city now.
People in that neighborhood are being told to go to the big pool on the
corner of Lesseps and St. Claude (this is one block from my
house) to be airlifted out, tho people are allowed to leave by their own
means if they can.

He reports helicopters all over the place of all kinds - everything from
large Army helicopters with guns to Red Cross helicopters - they are
swooping down low in the neighborhood and 'buzzing' houses - he said one
just flew low enough over him to blow shingles off the roof.

He is starting to see National Guardsmen marching through the streets with
guns to make sure people obey evacuation orders.

He wanted to get into a neighbor's house to save their dog that is locked up
in there, but was told by a National Guardsman that unless he has keys to
the house, if he tries to break the door in he will be shot on the spot.

He also reported that Dr. Bob, Bywater artist, was beaten by NOPD who
thought he was a looter - they beat him up severely and took his weapons.

We are being forced out of our city, with no word as to if and when we will
be allowed to return. We've been wondering what they would do after enough
people were forced to die of starvation. Population reduction has been
accomplished.

Here are the updates I was working on before this latest call from
Daniel:

Yesterday I finally spoke with my best friend Daniel who stayed in New
Orleans as he finally was able to make a call on his cell phone.
He was calling from the upstairs of the house he lives in, sitting on the
porch with an AK-47 in his lap. More details on that call to follow.

He just left me a message about 5 minutes ago telling me that there are cops
driving around the neighborhood with bullhorns telling everyone that there
is a mandatory evacuation and EVERYONE must go.

There are helicopters all over the skies. He is not sure if they are just
trying to scare people into leaving, or if they are serious, but he has
found a ride and they are leaving the city.

We do not yet know how this will affect our plans to return to the city.

We will be monitoring the situation as we drive towards New Orleans today
and will assess our plans when we arrive in Baton Rouge, our first stop
before heading into the city. If we are not able to gain access to the city
- which we will still try to do - we will be assisting with relief efforts
in Baton Rouge and Covington, where there are hundreds of thousands of
refugees from New Orleans in desperate need of assistance.

Some people have asked for a physical address to send money to, so here are
two places you can do this. Our good friend Ward Reilly, who will act as our
Baton Rouge liason and staging ground, can cash checks for us (we will not
have access to bank machines in New Orleans to cash checks!).

The best and easiest thing to do is send a check or money order made out to
Ward Reilly and note on the check that it is for Get Your Act On.

Please send to:

Ward Reilly
645 Kimbo Drive
Baton Rouge, LA 70808

People that are on their way to Louisiana to help or want to come down -
right now we do not advise people to try to enter the city of New Orleans
until we know better what the situation is, especially with the breaking
news about the forced evacuations. However, there are hundreds and thousands
of refugees in the areas around New Orleans, and there is a desperate need
for help there.

Daniel says that in 6 days they have not seen or received any help.
In 6 days they saw one policeman - flying through the neighborhood in a
police car at 40 miles an hour.

He reported that for the first two days after the storm, Wildlife and
Fisheries were rescuing people from the flooded out lower 9th ward, blocks
from my house and his house by boat - and just dropping the people off on
the dry side of the levy, with no food or water or anywhere to go.

He said that after two days the boats just stopped coming. He had no idea
why until I explained the situation with the National Guard to him, and that
the rescue boats were told to stand down and stop rescuing people.

The people locked down in the city have no idea that supplies are sitting
just outside the city and being turned away.

The only reason they have food is they managed to gather what they could
from friends' apartments, etc., but again, no one has come to help them or
bring them food. Other than the people left stranded in the neighborhood, it
has been completely abandoned by all official entities.

Here is a bit of heart breaking news. There is only one radio station people
can receive in the city. Daniel said that people trapped in their attics in
the lower 9th ward have been calling the station saying where they are and
asking that some one come get them.

But there is no one to come. Those that are not already dead are dying.
Daniel estimates that there are easily some 40-50,000 people dead in their
homes in the lower 9th ward. I can not imagine listening to this on the
radio, knowing that these peoples pleas are falling on deaf ears. They have
simply been left to die.

Now, as with others we have had contact with in New Orleans, the people are
afraid to leave their homes because of the National Guard, who have
permission to shoot anyone on the spot.

There are many more small details Daniel relayed, but I do not have time for
them all now. Just to say that he confirms reports we have received about
supplies and relief not getting through. Apparently some assistance is
starting to get into the city, but not to the poor neighborhoods.

OK, I have to go now - we need to get on the road towards New Orleans. We
will be stopping in Baton Rouge where we will be meeting up with Daniel
(they have found a car to get out of the city) and we will then assess the
situation and take things from there.

It looks more and more like we will not be able to enter the city without
the extreme likelihood of being killed in the process.

So we will regroup in Baton Rouge and start relief efforts with the refugees
already there and the rest of the people being airlifted out of New Orleans.

If we deem it at all possible, we will still try to enter the city of New
Orleans, but we will not put ourselves in the position of being killed as
then we can be of no help to anyone.

SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON.

WHY DID OUR GOVERNMENT DELIBERATELY STARVE THE POOR PEOPLE OF NEW ORLEANS?

WHY ARE THEY FORCING US OUT OF OUR CITY AND DO THEY PLAN ON 'GIVING IT
BACK'?

QUESTIONS NEED TO BE ASKED AND ANSWERS GIVEN. WILL THE REFUGEES BE GIVEN ANY
FOOD AND WATER NOW? WHAT ARE THEIR PLANS FOR THE PEOPLE THAT MANAGED TO STAY
ALIVE.

NEW ORLEANS HAS BEEN TAKEN OVER BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT.
BEWARE, THIS MAY COME TO A NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR YOU.
