"I know what the body count is so far, but I won't horrify the nation."
10:12: A.M. - Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard: I'm not surprised at what the feds say, they're covering their butts. They're keeping the body counts down because they don't want to horrify the nation. It's worse than Iraq, worse than 9-11. They just don't want to know how many were murdered by bureaucracy.

10:10 A.M. - Broussard: I know what the body count is so far, but I won't horrify the nation.

32. don't be too hard on broussard
the numbers will come out. He's been under quite a strain, and his emotional indictment of the federal response on yesterday's meet the press will be one of the hallmark images of this entire tragedy.

37. He moved me to tears
I don't usually watch meet the press but decided I should watch it this week to see/hear the remarks. I was caught off guard and unprepared for his passionate and personal report, and couldn't help but cry with him.

The apple is finally being jarred out of Sleeping Beauty's throat. Mr. Broussard, PLEASE tell us what the body count is, because you know the feds will cover it up.

3. The body count is..
.. going to be very high, in the thousands.

And why not just go ahead and say it. People should be horrified by all this.

It's time to wake up.

it's seems pretty obvious the count will be in the thousands.

10. Not when the Busheviks get through Prudneizing it
Whatever the Body Count, multiply it by 3 to get the eactual body count.

The Bushevik-generated body count will be as believable as that 4.9% unemployment figure.

They are crossing over into Full Blown Soviet-ness.

We're already horrified. Lying further is just more horror.

If they try to reduce the body count, well, that is a Stalin technique in fact.

36. The war profiteering corporate news monopolies have been "reducing"
body counts for some time. I guarantee you that many more than 2,000 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq. One hundred thousand innocent Iraqis were slaughtered in the initial U.S. invasion, by the bombing alone--according to the British doctors' report--but we don't even count Iraqis. (--can't mis-count what you don't count). They've been underestimating protest crowd sizes by half or more, for decades. (Also, if a thousand people show up for a leftist protest, you can be sure that the three rightists across the street with signs will get equal billing.) They can't count! They can't even count votes. They can't even add up their own exit poll numbers (--FALSIFIED on everybody's TV screens on election night to hide strong evidence of a Kerry win).

I've been around awhile, but I've never seen anything like the Bush Cartel and its lapdog press for baldface lying.

You wonder why the Bush Cartel doesn't want returning coffins shown--and why the war profiteering corporate news monopolies are going along with that? I'll take a wild guess. 10,000 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq, not 2,000. I'll bet money that my number (or worse) is eventually proved right.

You wonder why they didn't start doing anything about the dead bodies in NO until they had it under military lockdown? I wouldn't be surprised if the true body count tops 9/11 and then some, maybe even double (5 to 10 thousand or more in the region), not counting the people who are dying NOW, of aftereffects--stress, waterborne disease and infection, kidney damage (from dehydration), complications in diabetics, damaged immune systems (new illnesses), suicide, etc. They won't even be counted--because the poor are being dispersed all over the map.

And of course they're going to downplay the numbers. They are guilty of MURDERING all these people--just as surely as if they were gangsters running a nightclub where the roof collapses on the guests due to shoddy construction and the bribes and muscle used on building inspectors. That's what the Bush Cartel IS--a criminal gang; looters; thugs; murderers, and congenital liars. It is only by means of Diebold and ES&S--and the collusion of the war profiteering corporate news monopolies--that they have any veneer of "government" to their actions.

This is America! These were/are American citizens! This was an entire major American city--gone! Not just a nightclub--an entire American city! --due to underfunding and neglect and malfeasance, and coldhearted greed and calculation, by the people in OUR White House!

A city of beauty and music and color! A treasure-trove of African-American culture! And Cajun culture. And French-American culture! Gone! And its poorest citizens subjected to unconscionable horrors and abandonment.

Of course they're going to lie about it! Bush was eating birthday cake while it happened. They can't NOT lie about it. They DID it.

As soon as the Feds took over, they would have made damn sure we did NOT get accurate body counts.

They've gotten really good at hiding information from the American public.

I can't even imagine life without the internet now...how the hell else can we keep tabs on these mofos?

11. I think we'll get a real body count
because somewhere there will be a list of every name and people will look for the names of their family members and will notice if they are missing.

In fact, there will probably be a monument with the names. I would hope.

Don't forget the homeless in NO nobody ever knew. Whole families have been wiped out all over the region and their bodies have been swept by storm surge and flooding to God only knows where--out to sea, in the swamps, etc. Illegals, foreign nationals, tourists. We will never know an accurate count.

16. And they'll be runaways
and people who took a quick trip to visit a friend.

They'll never be an exact count.

Some people who died didn't tell anyone they were going to be in NO that day. Some families will wonder and others will have no clue at all.

A friend of mine's sister ran away from home 35 years ago and they have never heard a word from her.

20. It's appalling that the body count is being suppressed
Check almost any foreign paper and you'll see estimates at least 10,000, some of them much higher. But U.S. media is saying ridiculous numbers like "120" and "140".

We are already horrified.

The body count WILL eventually come out and w'ell be horrified all over again. This will be another backlash against Bush. How could is possibly help him?

25. So far, all the models have held up...
I heard the other night that the models said the death toll would rise to 44,000 people. 80% evacuated beforehand. In a city of 500,000 people, that leaves 100,000. About 50,000 more have finally gotten out, or are on their way out...that leaves 50,000 missing....IMHO, 40,000+ dead is not beyond reality.

35. LSU ran models about 7 years ago. Estimated 100,000 dead if NO flooded.
Also, I think it was the Red Cross who I heard the Sunday before the storm hit who estimated 40,000-60,000 dead if NO flooded.

I think 10,000-50,000 dead in NO alone. Add in the rest of the region, including all the bodies yet to be found in the rubble of the Mississippi coast (most of whom did not evacuate before the storm), and the death toll will be enormous.
