Black Box Voting . COM site pulled down -- Harassment
http://www.blackboxvoting.com was taken out in this way:

A spammer spoofed our address and sent obnoxious email under our name. We are attempting to resurrect the site.

Please PM me if you are willing to host chapters physically on your site -- we have one coming out tonight that I want hosted on at least 100 sites due to bandwidth considerations.

I'd volunteer, but I have no website or resources to help you.

But this message will, at least, keep you kicked to the top.

3. Yes. But what is annoying is that we were not given a chance
to address this before the pulldown. It took some hours to get the offending document. We are looking into the routing information on it now.

9. Not spoofing, it took me a while to decipher headers
Some looney running a religous site sent an email out to a number of people with Bev's interview from Buzzflash.

A person receiving the email from the looney complains to spamcop.

Spamcop complains to ISP.

ISP yanks us.

Apparently there is NO appeal. Though I am trying.

Get rid of the ISP and BECOME an ISP.

Buy a server box from Dell or someone for a couple of thousand bucks and put it in a broom closet or in a basement.

Make sure it runs Linux & Apache.

10. How big are the PDF chapters? (in kilobytes)
One solution to getting the damned thing out there is to post the chapters as attachments on articles to various indymedia sites. Start with one close to you, and then start cross linking back to the indymedia posts (you can dig out the direct attachment URL if you want to cross link that, too).

Go global. Put some on the US indymedia servers, but also various regions that are a little more out of reach, such as the numerous Latin American indymedia sites. Given that touch screen voting is becoming an issue in Latin America, it would be helpful to pass that information to Latin American activist communities as well. Try posting the chapters as attachments at http://argentina.indymedia.org and http://brazil.indymedia.org for example.

On the main site: http://www.indymedia.org
Look on the left-hand column for the global network. Most indymedia sites will allow attachments of up to 100MB per post -- some restrict it a bit more than that to 10-20 MB each.

In any case, once you get the files attached and posted, you can then use that URL elsewhere. I've done this for my own video productions several times.

San Francisco's indymedia site: http://sf.indymedia.org is usually a good one for larger attachments. The Global one (www.indymedia.org) isn't very good about handling them, so skip that one. You can easily post a link on the global one to an attachment elsewhere, however.

This is CERTAINLY a valid media item for the indymedia network.

Am I wrong to think the results are going to court ?
The recall will be close, recounts will be ordered, memory chips will be provided, tampering will be alleged.
Could make GA. and Md. choices questionable.

Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 02:27 PM by htuttle
Not political activists, per se -- you've already done that.

More like the slashdot crowd. You might be able to find some really bulletproof server space through someone from there.

Also, I just had the craziest idea. You know the open source project server, 'sourceforge.net'? I don't think you HAVE to have a project that includes source code to set up a project site there. I know of several sourceforge projects that are documentation-only.

Perhaps that's a possiblity: set up a BlackBoxVoting open source project, and post the chapters of the book and other research notes there. There may be restrictions as far as involving any commercial enterprise with it, but you might still find a way to make it work.

If you really wanted to be daring, I suppose you could stick some other source code up there...nah, they'd probably get upset about that at sourceforge. But I'm pretty sure you could go the documentation project route with little problem, and they've got some decent 'hacker-jutsu' practitioners guarding the server.

Just trying to put into practice the old aphorism, "The internet treats censorship as damage and routes around it."

19. We Have Copies Of The Files On Scoop.... & The Indymedia Suggestion
Unbelieveable...

Spammers do stuff like that all the time. And malicious ones too. Whatreallyhappened.com has an ongoing problem of that kind.

That said few ISPs that I have come across are stupid enough to base a decision to pull a site down on the basis of a spoofed email return address... you should not be responsible for proving where the email came from... that is spamcop and the ISPs responsibility.

Meanwhile there is a set of PDFs here..

http://scoop.co.nz/mason/features/?s=usacoup

And we are happy to post all the rest. Post #10 Htuttle above wisely suggests posting em on several Indymedia sites... which is a very good suggestion. It would be sensible if someone was to do so to post em on both local and international collective sites.

Someone however will need to volunteer to actually do it.. I am sure Bev and David are far too busy.

If someone does do this then please notify me either here or by PM with the URLs of the Indymedia pages and I will post those at the above link.

If a forged email address was enough to kill an ISP account, then the several rounds of SOBIG viruses would have killed off just about everyone. Every infected computer sent out tens of thousands of emails, using forged addresses. For a few weeks there, one of our accounts was getting over 5000 "bounce" emails a day.

If you can't settle this, please share with us the name of your ISP. I'd like to tell everyone I know to steer clear of an ISP that is so incompetent as to be unable to ID a forged email. Even I can do that.

26. A quick recap of events.....
.....The blackboxvoting.org site was taken down by the ISP (Internet Service Provider) after they received a letter of complaint from Diebold's attorney. The letter alleged a breech of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) due to links to another site that contained internal memos and e-mail from Diebold personnel that outlined a number of illegal practices that Diebold was engaged in. The over 14,000 documents, obtained from a Diebold employee, gave explicit instructions on everything from how their Canadian employees should cross the border into the United States without work permits to work in U.S. elections supporting their equipment to instructions on how to fake demonstrations for elections officials when the promised software release was not ready in time. There were also instructions on how to get certain security flaws past the ITA (Independent Testing Authorities) certifiers of the election systems and software. There is no provision anywhere in the DMCA to pull down a site over links contained within it.

The Blackboxvoting.com site was pulled off line by another ISP after so called 'spam' e-mails containing a story about Black Box Voting was sent out by a web site totally unaffiliated with Bev or her publisher David at Plan 9 Publishing. If what I'm hearing from my friends in the legal department is correct, Bev's ISP and SpamCop may have opened themselves up to a 'restraint of trade' lawsuit for having pulled the site down without checking their logs first to determine whether the offending e-mails were in fact sent by her from her site. :)

32. Unless I missed something.....
.....Black Box Voting.org was taken down by a C&D letter from Diebold to the original ISP. DemA and Bev then moved it to a server owned by Bev C. who subsequently were served with a C&D. Bev C. filed a response letter to the Diebold C&D and refused to take the site down.
Bev C.'s ISP then were contacted by lawyers from EFF and seized the server in what could only be described as an 'overabundance' of caution!
If I'm wrong about this someone will be along shortly to straighten it out. :)

Hi PP, I wrote a BBV Exclusive on agonist.org ("creativelcro", just look on the front page, top left, where the Exclusives are listed).
I was gathering info to write a short story on how Diebold is harrassing various people (shutting down sites etc)...

Did the EFF seize the server to protect themselves ? I'm not sure I understand... The story posted on bbv.com (about bbv.org) was that Diebold sent a letter to the "server farm" that was leasing equipment to the ISP. Is the server farm associated with EFF ? Very confusing... I'll ask Bev, but I assume she has other things to care care of these days :)... Thanks for any information you may have...

The Rise of the Voters

The recall might be the beginning of a full-scale, ballot-box revolt

By David Lesher
Schwarzenegger leading the pack in the battle for California governor.

Pat Caddell has seen voter anger. He was the pollster for President Jimmy Carter in 1980 when voters swept in the Reagan Revolution. And he’s counseled anti-establishment rock-throwers like Gary Hart, Jerry Brown and Ross Perot. This time, he says about the recall of 2003: “It’s real.”

10. “It’s pronounced ‘Gu-ber-na-tor-ee-al’.”

9. “Your wife called to say there’s no way in hell she’s voting for you.”

8. “Kids don’t need subsidized school lunches—they need mass-building protein power supplements.”

7. “Remember, when you’re shaking hands, ease up if you hear cracking.”

6. “Good news! Lou Ferrigno just endorsed us!”

5. “Don’t worry—Mars isn’t close enough to hurt you.”

4. “I’m not sure saying ‘Hasta la vista, baby’ constitutes an outreach to Hispanic voters.”

3. “Who’s the actor who plays Gray Davis?”

My professional mailing list has a subsidiary list for non-professional discussions, and a couple of California residents were talking about how "cool" the new voting machines were.

I took the opportunity to point out some of the problems, and since I didn't have the relevant URLs handy, I directed people to do a Google search on "black box voting." Since there are some computer-savvy people on this list, it should raise some discussion. I'll have to see what happens when tomorrow's digest comes in.

Well done everybody on the Indymedia postings. Indymedia is a fantastic resource and these postings are excellent.... and please be sure to post the next chapters as soon as they are posted either at blackboxvoting.com or if down when mirrored at Scoop...

As I think ParanoidPat once observed... "behold the power of parallell surfing, for it is mighty indeed." (I paraphrased this... and I may have also misattributed... and if so sorry in advance.)

101. Hiya Woodstock!
Some IndyMedia sites operate differently from others; Baltimore is one of those that makes uploading multiple files to one page a real PITA. Uploading more than one file would have turned the one article into 4 articles, each containing a different BBV PDF chapter to download, and necessitating visits to 4 different pages to download the files. If you go to the actual posting:

http://baltimore.indymedia.org/newswire/display/5121/index.php

you'll see the link to http://www.blackboxvoting.com/ at the bottom of the article. One can hit that link and then download all 4 chapters from a single page at BBV.com. I should have explained this before and I hope I explained it adequately today. Thansk for the heads up Woodstock! :hi:

Have you considered asking the Democratic candidates to host them? Given Kucinich's strong fair elections statements, something tells me he'd be honored to host a chapter. Can things like that be put in a Wiki? Total techno-moron here, but it seems like a logical thing.

84. The story is more complex....
I think what "they" were worried about was the "Real time vote monitoring" on the BBV.com forum Bev had announced a couple of days back. "THEY" did not want that to take place. They don't care about the book, that is virtually out there already anyway (with all the material posted since January)...
Any comments on this ?

102. Glad to know NOW, a day later, that the ISP woke up .....
realized his/her mistake, and restored http://www.blackboxvoting.com !!!

I think it is very important to contact our Congressmen/women and tell them that they MUST get up to speed on the BlackBoxVoting issue.

• As County after county and state after state blindly (?) order electronic voting machines, spending tons of money badly needed elsewhere, following each other like sheep to the slaughter, it looks like it is too late to stop the use of the machines. <wonder how much bribery of election officials that took? Just wondering.>

• It is going to be very important to develop a way to independently monitor all upcoming elections, especially November 2004.

• Tell them we know we cannot count on the media to do the monitoring via exit polls, etc.

* Tell them chapters of BBV book are now available to read and download on every indymedia site in this country and many others around the world. Congressmen and Senators are going to be hit by questions that cannot be answered with the usual boilerplate stuff.

* Unless we can find a way to reassure voters that there really will be voting protection (Not sham-vote monitoring), people will refuse to vote.

Also tell them the people will remember who stepped up to the plate to deal with this issue and who did not.

THE TIME IS NOW.

105. I am deeply, deeply greatful for the help in getting this book out
You all have been just amazing! This lifted my spirits and gave me hope that America is, after all, still the America we hoped; it has been hijacked, but not converted.

Chapters 5,6 and 7 are up. http://www.blackboxvoting.com
I especially encourage you to host the Chapter 7 file at your site, for bandwidth considerations and to get as many eyes on it as possible. It's been up about a minute and already getting heavy traffic. It's 339 kb in size, and (unlike the others, so far) has some information never seen on DU. Just a little. More to come.

Thank you so very, very much -- With the DNC announcement, we need to use every ounce of ammunition in the book to push for the whole package. Remember that a paper trail is not the same as a paper ballot, and we need to insist on a paper ballot; and the paper ballot is only half the battle -- the other half is the audit procedure.

We're getting there, and it's been a long haul with everyone doing what they are good at.

The book is still of urgent importance -- but now it is framing issues which have been given endorsement and credibility. At long last.

Bev Harris

BLACK BOX VOTING: How corporations want to hack democracy

by Zhade Saturday October 04, 2003 05:08 PM

The first seven chapters of Bev Harris' incendiary masterwork on the digitzed theft of our right to vote and have those votes counted

download PDF (65.0 kibibytes)

You've heard the story: how private corporations with ties to defense contractors and prominent Republicans are counting 80% or more of our votes using a secretive process voters are not legally allowed to scrutinize. All this without a paper-trail backup verified by the voter and audited independently to ensure a reliable and accurate vote count.

And for the hackers and techies out there, I have just two words on what is used by these corporations to tabulate the votes: MICROSOFT ACCESS.

Download and read these, and share them. Our voting rights are at stake.

Something is slipping and sliding around on this thing, and it's driving me nuts. Chapter 7 is important, so you may want to wait until tomorrow noonish to download it. Right now, the graphics and the text slid away from each other.
