In fact I would venture to say that rich white people hate poor whites even more than blacks. Poor blacks are at least allowed to service their masters while poor whites aren't even allowed to do that. Remember, even in the antebellum South poor Southern whites were the lowest of the low and NOT allowed to work on the rich man's plantation. Most black slaves in the South actually had better lives than the poor whites--although at least the whites were free. I do believe that may be at the root of the racist attitudes of poor whites in the south, because they were so mistreated by southern rich people that they misplaced their anger against blacks.
