RIP, GOP
Excellent diary at dkos:

I honestly believe that we are witnessing the beginning of the end of the so-called conservative movement, and the Republican Party that it currently inhabits. The slow-motion horror that the nation is witnessing on the flooded streets of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast is the final, irrefutable evidence that the GOP is not fit to govern this great nation. There is no amount of spin and slime that can erase what millions of Americans are seeing for themselves on the evening news.

......

Tragedy has a way of revealing character. The constant drumbeat of death from the war in Iraq, and now the cascading nightmare that is the Gulf Coast flood has peeled away the veneer and we can see the GOP leadership and the larger conservative movement for what it is: a sham. They have nothing. They offer nothing. They come to destroy, not to build. They have no vision for a greater public good because, for them, the very notion of a public good is anathema.

Make no mistake: as we watch our fellow citizens drown, starve, and die in the street in New Orleans, its not incompetence or lack of planning that is killing them. It is willful neglect. It is the direct result of reducing the government "down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub." This is what "starving the beast" looks like.

For some 30 years the Republican party has packaged humanity's darkest and most craven weaknesses and pawned them off as its greatest virtues. Well, the reckoning is here and the conservatives are found wanting. When the chips are down we are a nation that cares for our citizens and we expect our government to be strong enough, capable enough, and compassionate enough to do the same.

.......

Rest in peace, Grand Old Party. America can no longer afford the drag that your self-delusions and cheap justifications put on our spirit. For those who are willing to turn back from pandering to the lowest common denominator and who choose to join us lifting up the better angels of our nature, we offer the hand of friendship. For the the rest: may the God whose name you have scandalized and used as cover for your lack of humanity have mercy on your degenerate souls.

3. Reports of the GOP's demise,
to rephrase an old chestnut, are greatly exaggerated. The craven immorality the author cites is the reason for their success, and will be the reason they'll come out of this either lightly singed or scented with roses.

11. Agreed. The cockroaches need to be exterminated.
The tentacles reach deep into the body politic and require extensive and concerted efforts for many years. We've not even begun.

4. "Its the ideology, stupid!"
We are now experiencing the culmination of decades of conservative movement policies. They have complete control over government and bear full responsibility. We are reaping the consequences.

The American people need to wake up to this fact. Katrina is like a whack upside the head with a dead sturgeon.

5. I wonder how the media will cover the 2006 mid-terms?
Will they ignore rigged elections again? Or will they finally shine a bright light on all the electioneering that have allowed these criminals to take over?

7. RIP indeed
Bill Maher said it best last night: The breakdown of relief to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina is "George Bush's Waterloo".

No one in my circle of family or friends who regularly votes Repub had anything good to say about Junior. My 69-year-old father, who's voted GOP since 1968 (he didn't vote in 2000), told me his heart was breaking for the victims. "I don't understand why Bush isn't sending them help", were his exact words.

Time for all those on Capitol Hill and this Administration to start updating and faxing those resumes. The party's over, and you're being frog-marched out the door.

So long, you SOBs.

8. Per the Constitution
doesn't the government provide for the "general welfare" of the American people? I would think that means being able to handle a catastrophe of the magnitude of Katrina? If NOT, what does that directive MEAN?

We are WAY past impeachable offensives for Nero. What did they impeach Clinton for?

It's TIME.

16. Over optimistic projection
It is 3 years until the next presidential election. It is over a year until the next mid term elections. Sadly the citizens of this country have a 60 second attention span. This will all be forgotten (except in NOLA) in 3 years.

18. "They come to destroy, not to build." That sums it all up quite well,I
think. While the wee cowboy rides bikes, fundraises, and golfs..Americans are dying here and in Iraq, our country is becoming a third world country and Iraq is in shambles.
