7. there are 25,000 or more people in dome and convention
center without water or food
there are people on highways and in apartment buildings without food or water
where are the boats, water, food - where are the air drops? This is not doing anything
They are miles away feeding volunteers They are not helping those who need it the most they people are dying after being rescued they are dying in the dome and convention center
yes they have done a little - but they should be there now
people are in hospitals and hotels without food or water
Fema is taking busses and cars from others who have them and preventing them from escaping - they are blocking people
8. Exactly...doing a "little" but not enough, I'm sorry.
200 shelters isn't going to cut it.
I'm disgusted that with the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and FEMA down there, there is ANYONE without what they need. It's sick and deplorable - I am so beyond words with this entire situation.
10. There are Red Cross shelters set up all over Texas
These people should have been evacuated BY THE GOVERNMENT 2-3 days ago and put in these shelters that were set up. The Red Cross long ago determined that there wasn't any safe shelter in New Orleans, therefore they will NOT open one. They don't want people running on the assumption that shelter=safety. There was a reason that the city called the Superdome "shelter of last resort". The government fucked up so you blame an agency that is doing good things.
9. CNN reported this afternoon that three alleged Red Cross shelters...
in Mississippi don't exist. Red Cross has a very bad reputation for collecting money under "disaster" pretexts then diverting it to other purposes: executive pay increases, more advertising, etc. If I were going to give money -- unfortunately I can't (because I live literally hand-to-mouth on a mostly fixed income) -- I'd give it through the Teamsters disaster relief fund or maybe United Way.
They have only set up shop in locations over a hundred miles away where they help the people who were lucky enough to get out in cars.
I am waiting to see who appears to be the most visible in the trenches before I give anybody my hard earned money.
I gave $ to the Red Crescent for the Iran earthquake and to the International Red Cross for the tsunami.
But the American Red Cross is a totally different animal (think Elizabeth Dole) than the International Red Cross. Right now it appears the American chapter doesn't like to get its hands too dirty.
6. Salvation Army is always in the *middle* of things
and with virtually no overhead---some don't like their stands on issues and I'm one but look at any of them on those charity lists and you need to go with the Unitarians to really get away from religious beliefs tht are troublesome.
I wont' give to the RC because time after time they spend more time collecting and upgrading their facilities than aiding the worst off---right now I hear they are about 50 miles up the road from N.O. Not quite the level of need I'm trying to alleviate. I know this from a relief worker on the scene.
You are welcome to send your money where you like, I'm sending mine where it will get to the worst of conditions in N.O. and Gulfport.
As having been flooded in Hurrican Isabel, I can tell you that the ONLY people that helped us was the Salvation Army! The Red Cross came 5 days later and threw mops out in front of my house from a truck! That's it. The Salvation Army came the very next day and made hot meals and coffee for all of us in the community. They were our life support! Without that food and coffee we wouldn't have had the energy to start putting our lives back together! If I have money to spare or time, I donate to the SALVATION ARMY!
