I would like to see some media reporting on this, and some serious learning by example of better evacuation methods, aid distribution, and general preparedness.

I'm not posting this to be alarmist. I do think we need to consider what to do about the rest of this hurricane season, which is forecast to be well above normal.

1. Absolutely

And note that BushCo knew that, when they cut the federal funding to that area. They knew this was predicted to be a terrible hurricane season, and cut (rather than increased) their budget by 44% this past June.

Defies logic. What happens to homeless people in a hurricane??

Even if it's alarmist, it's best to see the possibility now, in case it has the slightest chance of helping people make wise decisions while they recover. All things being equal, keep future storms in mind, as well as survival and recovery.

3. we need to learn

There is an old folk song, I think, about whether it's better to build a hospital at the bottom of a cliff because people keep falling off, or to build a fence at the top. We need both - people who know how to help when things happen that are beyond control. But also people who can look at possibilities and plan for them ahead of disaster.

I'm at my limit being outraged and appalled at our government. I really thought I had already hit it, and now this is just beyond imaginably worse.

corner. We've still got the whole month of September to consider.

4. There is another one forming in Atlantic right now named Lee

It is still a Tropical Depression but could develop into another Katrina. I doubt Insurance companies will offer coverage for this type of destruction much longer. I think New Orleans is pretty much a goner.
