NOLA Zoo and Aquarium
Has anyone seen any reports about damage to the zoo or aquarium in New Orleans? I have seen hundreds of reports but no mention of either the zoo or aquarium. With NOLA being emptied, I wonder what they will do with their animals.

1. I read on DU yesterday that they are fine...
Only a few flamingos died.

Of course, I believe that was before the levee breaches.

2. The aquarium in Biloxi "Oceanarium?" was destroyed.
I think the porpi in the hotel swimming pool are okay, but I guess the fish in the tanks are now in the Gulf, if they're lucky.

6. I also saw on CNN someone naming at least 3 seals that were found dead.
He said one was found shot in someone's backyard.

4. The Aquarium was squashed, sadly
Animals had to be disposed of as humanely as possible under the circumstances. Very sad. I *think* I heard the zoo was evacuated ahead of time, but can't confirm.

13. The one in NOLA?
Are you saying the aquarium on the ocean front has been destroyed?! Or are you talking about the one in Biloxi?

18. Do you mean the Aquarium of the Americas?
I posted this question last night and no one can tell me. Is it gone? God, I loved that aquarium and the zoo. Someone said it was OK but I can't imagine that it is. The sharks, alligator snapping turtles and snakes will be dangerous if they survived.
:scared:

7. I cannot confirm this
I just talked to someone...ok, my ex, she has family in the Covington area. She mentioned that she heard from somewhere (???) that the sharks from the tanks at the Aquarium were seen to be swimming in the city and eating bodies.

Again, please take this with a big grain of salt. It's something I heard on a phone call an hour ago, and I cannot in any way substantiate.

15. A Hotel Pet ban is Bullshit under these circumstances.
Former GA governor Roy Barnes made an order that hotels in the state accept pets reardless of their usual policy during an evacuation. (Floyd I think.)

I think the SC Gov. did the same thing.

23. Here ya go - New Orleans Aquarium, Zoo escape Hurricane Katrina
http://news.mongabay.com/2005/0830-new_orleans_aquarium.html

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans apparently survived Hurricane Katrina relatively unscathed according to a report in The Baltimore Sun. Hurricane Katrina hit the Louisiana city Monday.

According to Ron Forman, president of the Audubon Nature Institute that oversees the city's aquarium and zoo, only a few flamingos died and was little other loss of animal life. The Audubon Zoo also fared well in the storm.

Located along the banks of the Mississippi River in the historic French Quarter, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas has some 10,000 animals and is considerd one of the world's foremost aquariums. Officials closed the aquarium early to prepare for Katrina.

<snip>

In neighboring Mississippi, the fate of a group of dolphins moved to Gulfport is unknown. According to The Daily Telegraph, the animals were last seen in a hotel swimming pool, but the storm left the town of 70,000 people under 10 feet (3m) of water. The Gulport aquarium was totally destroyed.
