If we're having such a big Fuel Emergency, don't you think
that some governors, or maybe (gasp!) the Resident should order all recreational powerboats docked until further notice?

I'll bet that just the boats here on Long Island Sound and the Connecticut River burn several hundred thousand gallons every weekend.

Multiply that by the rest of the country, if you will...

Just an idea.

3. Not true. Lots of middle-class people around here
have them as well. But that's no excuse. They should ALL be docked, and now.

Labor Day weekend in my area (recreational lakes) is like gas hog central.

2. I am not holding my breath,
can't piss of the haves and have-mores with things like rationing or limits, ya know.

It's bad for the shareholders, and as we know they matter more than the rest of us.

4. I don't see how not using gas here is going to help anything anywhere
else. It's not like it will be picked up here in the north and sent south. The time to conserve was long ago. I am now of the mind that only pain and suffering will force the energy issue. We need to do something else. We could use electric cars tomorrow, but people don't ask for them. Expensive and rare gasoline will do the trick. I am going boating.

9. You want to be selfish, be my guest.
It is indeed true that if we don't use it here, there will be more available elsewhere.

And, with that attitude, I sure hope I don't see any posts from your bitching about the cost of gasoline.

13. The only bitching you'll hear from me is that gas is too cheap. We are
addicted and no one will conserve in a meaningful way until it is painful

15. I'd favor a $2.00 per gallon tax on gasoline if it could be
applied as a rebate for heating oil and maybe Diesel. With 50% going for solar installations. Not "research." Actual installations.

16. That would be great. Unfortunately, it takes leaders with spine to
accomplish something like that. I hope that's where we are headed.

5. and recreational ATVs
Some people have to have them (like the power company to reach lines in the woods), but most of the folks around here (NW Arkansas) only buzz around on them. I'd like to have all of them locked up.

I bet the fuel consumption by these vehicles would match the fuel consumption of the boats you described.

BTW, hello New England! I visited there (New Haven CT) for the first time this spring and fell in love with the area!

7. Yeah
and mandatory thermostat settings, and a moratorium on shipping products we deem 'luxury' items.

Or, the prices rise, and people economize on their own.

I think a better choice would be to put a tax on it - encouraging economization, and using that tax to give everyone an energy credit, to spend as they see fit in the name of conservation or otherwise dealing with higher energy prices.

11. Those are good ideas for the long term, and we should indeed
implement them. But I'm talking about husbanding a short supply right now.

10. Yup. You're right about the ATVs.
Not to mention snowmobiles.

New Haven is only about 40 miles from us. Next time you're up here, let me know.

12. They aren't going to do anything until a bunch of people get killed
in riots. They don't act until it's way to late, until it becomes a serious political issue.
