I'll add that the response to Katrina is a pretty good
metaphor for Peak Oil:

1. With any degree of pre-planning, this would never
have happened in the first place. Who would be so
so stupid to build a city below sea level where you
you have to pump the water out? This is worse than
building your house on a foundation of sand. (Yes, I
know it was the French in the first place).

Building a civilization on a constantly increasing
supply of finite energy resources is equally stupid.

2. There were numerous individuals who had warned us
of this. What did the government do? Ignore them
and slash the budget for planning to deal with this
type of thing.

3. Once the crisis was unfolding, the poor and
vulnerable were hustled into a camp. Had people
been a little more willing to cooperate (anybody
ever hear of carpooling your way out of the danger
zone?) or had city officials commandered some
damn buses, there wouldn't have been lord knows
how many people stuck in the freakin Superdome.

In other words, there were ways to mitigate the
crisis that were perfectly technically viable but
weren't implemented because they would weren't
in line with our atomized culture.
