NEW ORLEANS (AFX) - Rescuers have so far saved 700 people from rising floodwaters in New Orleans, but 'many lives' have been lost in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco said.

'Some 700 people have been brought to dry ground during the night,' Blanco told Agence France-Presse.

'We know that many lives have been lost,' she said, but she warned that there was no way for authorities to put together reliable death statistics as yet.
