I wonder who has to make the decision to close the door on the Superdome
and I wonder what will happen to the thousands standing in the streets when they shut the doors.
Where will they go when they can't get into the shelter of last resort?
They should have started letting people in yesterday.

1. I didn't know they closed the doors
They did? I can understand them not wanting to violate the fire code in a crowded, panicky situation like this, but what are the alternatives?

4. There will be a point
probably in the next 4-5 hours, that the storm will start moving inland, tornado watches and warnings will be in effect, and the storm bands will cause heavy rain--hours before the actual storm hits.
All of the people standing in line will be vulnerable to those elements.
But you also have the inevitable problem of the Superdome filling up.
The bottom will be flooded. They already know that so there won't be anyone allowed on the floors--only in the stands. There is a finite number of people who will be allowed in.

5. I would think they would have to close the doors at some point
to keep the people inside safe from the strom or they could reach maximum occupancy levels.

8. Actually to keep people safe they will keep doors OPEN ...
Yes, they may have to turn people away because they reach capacity, but it is an important safety tip to understand that in a tornado or hurricane, you want to keep a certain number of doors and windows open.

It is the difference in air pressure between the inside and outside of a house or other structure that causes them to "blow up" in extreme weather.

Keeping the appropriate number of doors and windows open equalizes air pressure and prevents structural damage.

Just in case you ever have to ride one out.

11. That is wrong, deadly wrong.
Subject: C5) During a hurricane are you supposed to have the windows and doors on the storm side closed and the windows and doors on the lee side open?
No! All of the doors and windows should be closed (and shuttered) throughout the duration of the hurricane. The pressure differences between inside your house and outside in the storm do not build up enough to cause any damaging explosions. (No house is built airtight.)
The winds in a hurricane are highly turbulent and an open window or door - even if in the lee side of the house - can be an open target to flying debris. All exterior windows should be boarded up with either wooden or metal shutters.

13. They are telling us here in tornado alley
that this air pressure talk is just nonsense. Actually, it is more dangerous to stop and open windows than it is to go straight to the basement when we hear the sirens.

2. Reminds me of the
Noahs ark story..Noah shut the Ark while the whole world died outside.
And he thought he was rightious.

This is why I hate the bible.

And I bet those pieces of shit like Roberttson think good more poor and confused people dead.Easier to take over the world when your resistance numberrs are lower.

9. Well, he told them a rain was a' coming.
If memory serves, Noah warned people for a long time--they thought he was nuts.

What was he going to do, force them to make boats?

22. And God killed them
put a rainbow up.
If you are Christian stop reading now...

To me that promise was a load of crap, because god kills life in a piecemeal manner now... No more big ass worldwide flood... just every year hurricaines that kill, smaller floods that kill, tsunamis that kill..over and over we get hit and hit,and we can't stop the weather...And if global warming does not stop there may very well be another worldwide flood..And what then?
What excuse will the believers have to keep loving and obeying thier archon vengeful incompetant creator god than?

I get upset at disasters, and yes unlike most people I meet, spiritually I am a dualist. I don't like mixing in a little arsenic with my food so why should I mix evil gods with good ones and tell myself it is all good. What kind of horseshit is that? I never chose to be here despite what the New Ager create your own reality crowd says.. Katrina is goiing to kill someone ..Create a new reality than..
Wake up YOU can't create a new reality!! This one is FUCKED from the beginning.
I DO blame the evil creator for he made this hellhole this way. It forced me to be born here. Forced nature to create storms that kill and lets bullies stay in power... Some onmipotence. Some love..Makes evolution on the backs of the ones torn apart, makes life have to feed upon the living to live..This world is fucked, and if you think The Christian god is nice..I think he ain't nice at all... he made this world to be this way and I HATE the god of this reality..

I am seriously tired of denial about how things really are.
How can we hope to fix our situation, the human condition if we keep running away and pretending evil is good?

3. They have set up additional secondary shelters.
No one will be on the street but the secondary shelters may not be as safe.

6. But they didn't way where those shelters were.
I find that disturbing. Also, they should be open now because of the lines. Maybe they don't have the National Guardsmen to operate them. You think?

7. Are those secondary shelters near the Superdome?
I'm wondering about transportation from the Superdome to the secondary shelters.

16. I'd REALLY like to know where those "other" shelters are too....
sounds like they didn't say the names because they will do NO good. Wouldn't they have otherwise offered DIRECTIONS to these places, emergency tel. numbers of these places let alone at LEAST the NAMES of these "other" shelters?

Man, I do not get a good feeling about that. Maybe there aren't Nat'l guards there, may very well be avoidance of that situation to become public info. Don't know.....

Damn, this is some heart wrenching situation. I can't believe that last night, I was reading Mark Twain quotes about the vulnerability of this landscape, from so long ago.

Guess it's a matter of when, not if...and when is right NOW.

14. I have a foolish question.
Is anyone sure - really, truly sure - that the dome can stand up to a category V hurricane?

15. According to officials in that Parish,
the building can withstand sustained winds of 200mph. Now, of course, that is speculative, as it has never been put to the test.

occupancy, shouldn't they start taking on a "women and children first" policy?

21. The NOLA Area
is next door, as well as a huge mall.

In addition the Freeport McMoran Building-- orginally built as a commadn post for the feds, FEMA, and the oil companies, is across the street, and is built for this. The dome is downtown, and all downtown skyscrapers are anchored to bedrock 200ft below. In additon, they must be able to stand 8ft of standing water and Category 3 winds.

They are not perfect, they are the last resort.
