.
This will give you some idea of what the destruction will be like . . . (edited to add: Katrina is stronger than Camille as of right now.)

I think it's something like 187 mph winds? It went from three to five since yesterday. Really fast.

Can someone correct me on that?

8. Yep.
I do worry about those people in the SuperDome, but I suppose as a last resort it is better than being lower than sea level like most all of the City.

10. Is lower pressure worse? (Forgive me, I live where blizzards & ice storms
are the life and death weather situation, not so much hurricanes.)

13. The lower the barometric pressure the worse the storm
At this moment Katrina is 902 milobars(spelling) and Camille was 906 -o9 at the moment the exact # escapes me but this is worse AND BIGGER ACROSS

16. Think High pressure= nice weather and low pressure usually=
nasty weather

This is beyond nasty

I think NO had its last normal day a couple of days ago

I think officials are thinking that this could be the destruction of the city of NO as we all know it

God help them

14. The lower the pressure
The stronger the storm.
888 mb is the record. This one is 902(I believe) and has several hours left without any indication that it is weakening.

15. The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm. Here's some perspective:

http://www.weatherunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/show.html

"Katrina is in the midst of a truly historic rapid deepening phase--the pressure has dropped 34 mb in the 11 hours ending at 7am EDT, and now stands at 908 mb. Katrina is now the sixth strongest hurricane ever measured in the Atlantic. At the rate Katrina is deepening, she could easily be the third or fourth most intense hurricane ever, later today.

The list of strongest hurricanes of all time includes:

Hurricane Gilbert (888 mb, 1988)

The Great Labor Day Hurricane (892 mb, 1935)

Hurricane Allen (899 mb, 1980)

Hurricane Camille (905 mb, 1969)

Hurricane Mitch (905 mb, 1998)

Hurricane Ivan (910 mb, 2004)

17. Wow. Thanks for filling me in. I have been avoiding the weather
channels for fear we would get a replay of the hurricane coverage of last time. After watching Stephen Colbert's piece on it, I thought I could do without it.

Still, I do want to keep up on what is happening and I am very worried about the people who are trapped down there.

21. This is one of those "life time storms".
I assume the coverage is going to be pretty much non-stop for the next few days. At least this time it is warranted.

25. Yes, it will be on all night and for several days.
I see that CNN has even roused Aaron Brown this evening to come in and anchor the news.

It will not slow down to a even a Cat 2 until it's hundreds of miles inland.

23. I drove through the gulf states in 69
and I saw the devastation first hand. One side of the road where the piers used to be just had posts in the water. The other side of the street had foundations where houses used to be and some occasional toilets left standing. That was as far as I could see from the road. This will be a major killer and I am so concerned for these people....
