This is not the 1st time Rush used race on ESPN
Ismail perfect choice to rocket back in ND vs. Michigan history

September 12, 2003

BY JOHN JACKSON SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

RUSH OFFENSE: I've made my feelings clear about ESPN's decision to add Rush Limbaugh to ''Sunday NFL Countdown.'' Here's an excerpt of a Washington Post review of Limbaugh's contributions last Sunday:

''Limbaugh got started by questioning the league's minority hiring policies. He made many valid points. After all, the Lions' coaching search this season exposed the league's rules as kind of silly. But let's go back to the baggage. To hear a guy with such an obvious right-wing partisan slant decry the league's effort to ensure that minority head coaches are hired smacks of the mess that is politics, and there's no place for politics in our great American game.''

This is exactly what I feared when ESPN hired Limbaugh. Maybe his take on the minority hiring rules were right on the mark. But coming from him, many people will dismiss it because of his political leanings.

By the way, couldn't Limbaugh have waited until Week 2 before he said something that smacked of partisan politics? Then again, there's a reason I referred to him in the past as a right-wing windbag.

1. I read that in another article
but ESPN doesn't care. Their ratings are up 10 percent for that show, especially among men 18-34 (dittoheads, anyone?). Ratings are the bottom line; they won't fire him. This is exactly what they want.

3. Race baiting has always worked for the right.
Two issues that never fail to deliver for the right.

Race and sex.

ESPN can open the door for a wave of commentators that will spew hatred and slurs while calling the game.

4. You can't blame Rush for this
He's just being himself. I blame ESPN for allowing him to be himself on their network.

I was one who thought Rush deserved the chance to do sports as long as he kept politics out of it. I expected ESPN to make sure he did. Instead, ESPN has given him a wider forum to spout his racism. I guess we can add them to the networks that want to outFOX FOX.

I stopped watching baseball over the Hall of Fame flap. Now I'll have to stop watching ESPN. That'll give me more time to mow the lawn, at least. It's a shame, though-- just when the Cowboys start to look interesting again...
