LOS ANGELES, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Los Angeles's Crenshaw High School has lost its accreditation, a move that could give its students trouble when they apply to college.

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges told the school this week that it was losing accreditation, the Los Angeles Times reported. While accreditation is voluntary, most public and private schools seek the group's stamp of approval.

The association said it has "great concerns regarding student achievement, the implementation of a curriculum and instructional program aligned with California academic standards, and the capacity of the school to address other critical areas."

Crenshaw has 3,100 students, most of them from low-income families.
