Is Bush really a Ted Baxter?

Here is a letter I wrote to Chris Matthews. Before reading, please note that I lied a bit, but I believe that if a person wants to be read, you've got to sound reasonable and non-partisan.


Dear Chris,

First, I love your show and although I don't always agree with you, I do enjoy your point of view. I even have an old dusty copy of your book "Hardball" up in my bookshelf.

Last night you mentioned that perhaps Bush is a Ted Baxter. I think you might be on to something. The following quote, which you probably have already seen is quite odd.
"The larger point is, and the fundamental question is, did Saddam Hussein have a weapons program? And the answer is, absolutely. And we gave him a chance to allow the inspectors in, and he wouldn't let them in. And, therefore, after a reasonable request, we decided to remove him from power, along with other nations, so as to make sure he was not a threat to the United States and our friends and allies in the region. I firmly believe the decisions we made will make America more secure and the world more peaceful. "

I can't imagine what would make him say such a thing. It must be one of three things. One, he is so tired and stressed from this situation that he can't think straight. Two, he really is a Ted Baxter, or three, he is so insane that he thinks he can get away with saying this kind of thing, and no one will counter him.

Obviously option number one is the most generous, but to state such an outrageous falsehood, Bush would have to be to the point of mental breakdown.
Maybe your Ted Baxter quip really is the truth, and he actually doesn't know the sequence of events.

Either way, something is just not right.

...now, does he know that Cheney is whispering to him through a dental implant? Has he ever been curious as to why the guy that was heading up his VP search chose himself? Is he evil, stupid or both? Let's just say you exaggerated. Stretched the truth. You know, hyped it a little. It was only one or two phrases in a much lengthier letter. And technically true--you DO have a copy of his book, right?
