U.S. raids suspected chemical facility in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq — U.S. troops raided a suspected insurgent chemical weapons factory in northern Iraq, finding about 1,500 gallons of dangerous substances, the U.S. military said Saturday.

Lt. Col. Steve Boylan, a military spokesman, said 11 chemicals were found in the hideout in Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad, "which are dangerous by themselves, and mixed together they would become even more dangerous."

"Our feeling at this point is that had this stuff been mixed and used, it could have been very easily used against Iraqi and coalition forces," Boylan said.

The military cautioned in a statement, however, that ongoing testing at the facility was "insufficient to determine what the insurgents had been producing" and that further tests were required.

U.S. troops raiding a suspected chemical productions facility in northern Iraq took this photo of chemical production devices.

One problem, this chemical plant is a new production. In addition it reminds me of the laundry room in my first apartment building...

Isn't that all they've ever needed so far? The crappier the lies the better they seem to work somehow.

20. Exactly, it's new, just like the new presence of Al Queda in Iraq,
America-hating terrorists, and all sorts of things they've created while "searching" for them.

Ask anyone who thinks this laundry room is the "imminent threat" BushCo went on and on and on about. Long-range drones, etc.

24. Funny you should mention laundry room......
According to the CNN report he chemicals found were glycerin, sodium hydroxide and ethanol sulfate.

Glycerin is a natural by-product of the soap making process. Commercial manufacturers remove the glycerin for use in lotions creams, etc. My wife uses glycerin to handcrafted all of the soap that we use. We haven't purchased soap from a store in over 10 years.

Sodium hydroxide is used to make other chemicals. It is widely used in making soaps and detergents. It is used as a reagent for pollution control systems to absorb HCL and SO2, and it is also used in producing textiles, making paper, and in etching aluminum.

I'm not sure about ethanol sulfate, but ethanol is an alcohol made from grain and sulfate is a detergent (I think).

It sounds to me like the Kurds were just making SOAP! Ha! Ha!

29. I haven't even checked on "ethanol sulfate" because there ain't any such
compound. There MIGHT be ETHYL SULPHATE...which would be, let me think...(C2H5)2SO4 but I'm not sure that would be a stable or even possible compound...any DU chemists wanna help me here?...been 45 years since I took organic in college. ;-)

... but thats what the CNN report stated.

Isn't ethanol used to reduce sulphate emissions from our gas guzzlers?

28. At best, this MAY be an insurgent bomb-making lab...
although, as someone else pointed out, the chemicals involved are common.

But the right wing media is trying to spin this, at least among the more dense among them, as the long sought after Saddam WMDs.

Shameless. Like the 70% who were spun to believe Saddam did 9-11.

32. I Was Just at CNN.com...
...they said that it was possible this was the insurgents' stash, not Saddam's. All the more reason we shouldn't be over there. We went over there based on lies, & now the insurgents want to use chemical weapons on our people. Time to admit we were wrong & get out. It's not worth it for our soldiers to get killed by chemical weapons, and for what? A lie?
