Most of us have been there. You can just barely afford to pay the rent. But forget about buying furniture -- not if you want to eat, anyway.

Jose Avila recently found himself in just that predicament. Although he has a good job as a software developer, he's locked into two rents after moving to Arizona, and has no extra cash for an Ikea shopping spree. But instead of scouting street corners for a ratty, unwanted couch, Avila got creative and built an apartment full of surprisingly sturdy furniture out of FedEx shipping boxes.

Fanciful as his creations may seem, FedEx is not amused. The shipping giant's lawyers have sent Avila letters demanding he take down the site he created to document his project, invoking, among other things, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (.pdf), or DMCA.

Avila has outfitted his entire apartment with FedEx box designs, including a bed, a corner desk with wall shelves, a table, two chairs and a couch. Drawing from architecture and drafting classes he took in college, Avila has designed pieces that are surprisingly un-boxy.

I have always said, "Give me some Cardboard and some packing tape, I will build you the world." ...well I did.

9. sorry, missed the link
thought I'd already read the whole thing ... I dunno ... they have a point about the name of his website, I think, legally anyway ... but it seems insane to me from a PR standpoint for them to pursue this ... they want to force a kid to take down a website that is basically exalting one of the qualities of their product?? ... seems kind of like McDonald's suing somebody for starting a chickenmcnuggetsaregreat.com website, all about how wonderful Chicken McNuggets are, just because they used the name ... I know there are tricky copyright issues involved here and precedents they don't want to be set, but this action will probably cause more harm than good to their image

6. If the FedEx PR guys had half a brain, they'd take advantage of this.....
Granted, you don't want people pilfering your box supplies to make furniture, but what better way to demonstrate how durable their shipping boxes are? They're throwing away a great opportunity to get good PR out of this guy's project.

7. Looks like the perfect FedEx commercial to me.
something along the lines of how well their boxes stand up to shipping...sturdy and strong - no worry about damage to content.

Everyone at FedEx can't be this stupid!

That sound you hear is
a career in FedEx's Legal Dept
coming to a screeching halt!
