Note******
The Night of the Long Knives was a turning point in the history of Hitler's Germany. Hitler had made it clear that he was the supreme ruler of Germany who had the right to be judge and jury, and had the power to decide whether people lived or died.]

But two intelligence professionals and four former senior CIA officials familiar with the push-and-pull between the White House and the CIA said Tenet has become the sacrificial lamb to deflect criticism about exaggerated charges used to make the case for war on Iraq.

''The long knives are out, no doubt about it,'' said Richard Stolz, chief of the CIA's clandestine service under the first President Bush.

Kent Harrington, a former senior CIA official, said, ''If they're going to try to put this issue behind them, there's no question that this is a tried-and-true technique, to pick a 'stickee' and stick him.''

And former U.S. senator Bob Kerrey, D-Neb., who chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee, said recent events make clear that the administration decided, ''OK, we'll make George Tenet walk the plank.''

1. "Hilter?"
That's John Cleese in the North Minehead bye-election! Along with Ron Vibbentrop, Beinrich Bimmler and Mr. McGoering!

3. Once again, Watergate similarity
I can't recall the name of it but over one weekend it seemed as thought 1/2 of Nixon's regime resigned.

7. Saturday Night Massacre

Was it called the Saturday night massacre? I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it.

It happened under the cover of darkness, but in the light of the days to follow, it became the catalyst for the impeachment of a president.

9. yeah no kidding what a strange headline
it's almost like it's a hidden message to people who know a lot about hitler and nazi history-- i mean your average american reading the newspaper has NO CLUE what "long knives" refers to-- i sure didn't, until now

more evidence of the bush/nazi link, i guess
