My one indulgence is getting my hair done at an upscale salon in DC (upscale but busy, and by far NOT the most expensive/exclusive place in town). As most of you would probably agree, quite a bit of self-disclosure goes on at bars and beauty salons. I twisted the arm of my French stylist to talk politics today (he's so polite he wouldn't ordinarily do so). But he quietly volunteered that several of his female clients who are Republicans told him recently they have been very disappointed by *. He asked them why they voted for him previously, and they said they did not realize who * really was. If that's true, that is a very good sign.
On the bad side, he had recently been to Europe and when he told people where he was from, he heard anti-American sentiment; they don't like Bush and then attribute his bad behavior to us, since we seem to support him. I then said it was my opinion that people still don't understand in many parts of the US what * has done, and that the media is a large part of the problem; that at one time there was a counterbalancing of power among the government, big business, and the media (e.g., in the days of Watergate), but now, all these institutions are increasingly controlled by Repubs., which is disastrous for our country.
He said that several journalists frequented the salon and every single one that discussed politics had Republican attitudes. So much for liberal bias...
